Hi all:
My wife gave me a hall pass for a long weekend (thurs-sun) in October, I was going to hit the mullet migration in port Aransas.
I grew up fishing the surf in Galveston/Bolivar/Freeport, and I know my way around a jetty. I've never fished Port A, and am looking forward to exploring.
Any advice? Was thinking to hit the south jetty and the surf. I have 4wd so was going to look for some more remote areas to stake out, possibly kayak out some big baits if the water is calm enough.
Also, if anyone is up for it, I'd happily buy bait/ice/gas/beer/help you clean up if you have a boat... especially if you want to target tarpon, but I would also be up for some wade/bay fishing. (Like I said, I'm not a rookie, and have/will buy my own gear, so you're not signing up to bait hooks.)

October is a great time for big redfish at the jetty. There is also bank fishing at the park by the ferry. As an alternative look up dolphindocks. They have a 4 hour trip and I have caught some really big redfish on that trip in October.

I was thinking the weekend of the 16th (new moon) or 30th (full moon).

I love to fish the 2 jetties located in Mustang Island State Park, which is south of Port A. They are the only structure around that area other than differences in the sand bottom. There are usually so many mullet in the knee high surf that you don't have to throw your cast net very far. Mullet are good for flounder right in and around the closer to shore rocks or use Gulp Electric chicken jerk baits (4" or 5") on an 1/8th oz. jig head for the same thing. The mullet will usually do good out at the end of the south jetty for bull reds. I've also caught black drum and specks on both the mullet and Gulp. Biggest thing on the Gulp and 10# mono was a 4 1/2' spinner shark in waist deep water and that was without a wire leader. At first I thought it was a big red, boy was I surprised.

Thanks yall -- I think the jetties are open now, but I could be mistaken. Either way, lots can change between now and October
