I was thinking of taking my boat down there to fish and camp (at the state park) for a few days.
Is this wise going alone? (I don't know what the safety situation is.) I assume you have to stay on the US side.
Are there places that I need to be real careful to navigate?
Any other things to be concerned about that I don't know to ask about?
Thanks!

The danger is overrated but the heat is not, be prepared. When you get there visit Falcon Lake tackle and they’ll fill you in. Or just PM NoWeighers on the forum.

You can thank me later. The state gate is locked at night and the office is shut down. Ask for the gate code so you can get back in if you go to town for dinner. They should offer the code but the first time I went there she didn’t and we were locked in. I’m sure in is better than out. Less walking to you RV that way. FYI

I don't have to stay at the state park, I just thought of that by default.
If you know somewhere good to stay (with the boat) like a VRBO or AirBnB, certainly let me know.

State park ramp gets pretty sketchy when the lake gets low. Call Mr. Steed...I bet he can tell you "what's what!"

Instead of hauling a boat, staying by yourself fishing solo, leave boat home hire a guide for 1.5 days or 2. Plenty good guides including Jimmy. Probably be more beneficial to you..

It's safe. You will see more LEO than civilians there. Of course take normal precautions. Stay aware of your surroundings, lock your stuff up tight and it's best to be at the motel or camp by dark.
I've been 8 times now and always stay at Falcon Heights motel. Carlos Olivares and his family run the place. 956-353-9629 is his cell.
The accommodations are certainly not fancy. But you have cold AC, small fridge, microwave, satellite TV, good shower, and a shared outdoor kitchen/bbq area to make chow. Price is very fair.
It's 3 minutes drive to the State Park ramp.
The heat is real so prepare for that. Lots of fluids and sunscreen. I would agree that calling Falcon Lake tackle for the most up-to-date information on launching and fishing reports is a great idea. And you should definitely stop by!
That's my dos pesos. Mucho suerte amigo!

I say every summer Im going to go down once in the summer but I havent pulled the trigger yet. Id have to find some shade to park my rv under its got too much black on it.
They are launching off the bank at the state park, no shade at the state park camping spots, the closest gas station doesnt have much food and such.
No issues fishing alone, Ive been down there for months and fished alone, Ive towed in a netters boat and seen netters towing in a bass boat.
I have a rv and have stayed at the state park for 3 weeks as well as amigos rv park up in town for 3 months.
amigos has bad cell reception if that matters to you. amigos has a nice gravel rv area etc. amigos has some rental single wide trailers and such also, and may be able to get you under shade.
This time of year if your mostly going to fish the dam I would want to stay at the state park I think its a half hour drive from town down there on the pavement ish.
falcon lake rv is in town and has good verizon signal no shade is all dirt.
oso blanco motel is in town and has rv spots also and good verizon.
Lake front lodge has good verizon signal is a larger place semi private more people should be around. their rv spots are grass.
Beacon lodge is the one place I would avoid staying at, but he has a private ramp that is free to use.

State Park campground is safe. Yes they lock the gates at night but they give you a code. Currently you'll be launching off the bank on the point. Heat & the Covid bug should be your main concerns right now.

I've been down there in July/August when the giants were biting. It was almost not even worth going it was so darned hot. This will be your biggest challenge. I take that back. I would do it again right now if the fish were cooperating like they used to. It ain't that way any more. GL!

Maybe he likes fishing in his boat. Or he is like me and has no desire to ever hire a guide. Just doesn't sound fun to me

I don't use a guide either but know several people who have and they had plenty of fun and were on fish all the time..
