Have you had this surgery lately? Laser type ? How was your experience?

Still a couple of years away for me. My eye doc said that they are now doing stitch less cataract surgeries that are pretty easy to deal with.

I had laser cataract removal and lens implants several years ago. The procedure took about 10 minutes per eye, went home and took a nap, and wore a protective patch at night for 5 nights. Really nothing to it, but I can’t really tell you much about cataract only since they did the lens implant at the same time. They did one eye on Monday, week of healing, and did the second eye the next week.

HasBen, when they do "cataract" surgery, there is no "removing the cataract" without also taking the entire natural lens. An implant always occurs now, and has for decades. (Many decades ago one had to wear special glasses with no natural lens remaining in the eye.) With cataracts, the lens itself becomes hard and discolored - thru and thru. There is no removing the cataract without removing the natural lens; this is how they "take the darkened yellow shades" off.

So, anyone getting "cataract surgery" is effectively getting new lenses.

I was scheduled for it before COVID, so had to delay for the shutdown of elective surgery, but I got it done in mid-May when elective surgery was allowed again.

My vision was degraded to the point where the best correction I could get was 20/40 (with -10.0 diopter contacts), and even that was of poor acuity and color. My results are amazing. I now have 20/20 vision with no added contacts or glasses. With one eye done and one not done, I had time to compare them; the difference was almost beyond words. The entire world seemed twice as bright, even in my own home with no change in the lighting. Colors seemed very vivid and my night vision returned.

I would definitely encourage taking the laser option vs. the old scalpel method. It's faster, less intrusive, and has less chance of complications. The treatment I selected used the laser and/or ultrasound (I forget which) to break up the hardened natural lens. The pieces are drawn out via one needle puncture. The surgical equipment is like a robot arm. It essentially uses a large needle to pierce the eye rather than cut an incision slit. New lenses come pre-packaged from the manufacturer in a sterile cartridge/needle with the lens rolled up inside the needle! They use this ingenious approach to insert the lens without any slit cut by a scalpel. Therefore, I had no major eye trauma, no stitch, etc.

The eye shield they have you wear while sleeping is to prohibit rubbing your eye while sleeping so the eye has time to heal. (In my case it was just the needle puncture.) I had no pain or discomfort for the procedure or afterward. I would do it all the same again in a heartbeat if I had a re-do choice. As for visual acuity, that's going to vary based on many factors. In my case, my vision is so improved, and good enough, that the only time I use any added glasses (cheapie readers ) is for really up-close delicate work. Practically speaking, I can tie fishing line to hooks/lures unaided just fine without the readers to give you an idea of how well it turned out for me. It was a good choice I have not regretted.

Good info and thanx. Not sure what the VA Hospital in Houston offers...i.e. type/s of procedures but I'm leaning toward the laser type.Been watching some video's and what I saw was a "slime like" stuff being sucked up by a tiny vacuum cleaner!! My right eye is the bad one. Scheduling my next exam wasn't easy due to #19. My actual appt. was for Aug.12th but due to this "face to face" stuff, all exams were canceled for a good while. My next exam appt. was moved to Nov.3rd. Will see if that happens!!

I've done it. Quick, painless, and a great result.

Same here. I had both eyes done 6 years ago. I had worn glasses for over 60 years and went to 20/20 almost overnight. I'm still there and just need readers for real close up needs.

I had them removed a couple years ago with implants . Fast and the best thing I have had done surgery wise . Get the best lenses you can get . You don't get a second chance . Oh , also stay out of dusty conditions for a couple weeks after .

I had my 1st cataract surgery when I was 9 (1968) on my right eye due to a injury like said before they didn’t have a implant then and 3 years later the cataract came back I had surgery again still no implants , I tried wearing a plastic contact but it was pain full and would fall out all the time when I blinked so i would not wear them so basically I was blind in my right eye all through school, in1977 I got soft contacts and they worked great for years and in 1996 I finally got to have a implant put in and it has been great I still have to wear glasses. But it’s not really painful I would say go get it done.
