I would not live within a ten mile radius of downtown Detroit. Once you get to ten mile road, it’s OK.
Just across the river, Windsor Canada is nice
And Newark is a war zone. If downtown Newark and downtown Detroit got in a fight, Newark would win easily. More firearms and ammo; lots of knives downtown Detroit, it they would be outgunned Agreed. Port Huron to the north is beautiful. Been to Sarnia, Canada many times.

I would have no problem living in KC, MO. Grew up not far from there. The key is knowing what parts of town not to go into. That's the key in any City

Everyone takes Chicago "for instance" even though they are ranked about tenth. Here are cities that are higher, in no particular order. Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City MO, St Louis MO, Newark NJ, Cleveland and Memphis TN.
I think we are informed who to look at rather than looking for ourselves.
That doesn't answer the questions

Most urban murders have a direct tie to the drug trade, and most is contained within certain areas where this trade is prevalent. As such, if you live in one of these cities, you can keep away from most of the crime by not doing drugs, and staying out of certain areas.
The kidnapping/murders of folks walking out on trails is much more scary. They are a very small percentage of murders, but much more scary than the "normal" drug related stuff.
Domestic murders really have nothing to do with where you live. That stuff can happen anywhere.

As others have stated it's entirely location specific. There are two fairly small regions in Chicago on the south side that are dangerous. Everywhere is pretty darn safe. (Still hate the city, but that's another topic). The same is true for most big cities. A couple zip codes to avoid, particularly at night, and outside of that you are fine.

What is an acceptable daily murder rate for you to remain in a city?
What about a daily shooting rate?
I was just thinking about Chicago. Obviously that's the extreme. In July they averaged almost 3.5 murders a day and 18 people shot a day. We had 1 homicide in 2018 and 4 in 2017. Much higher than that I would have to seriously consider moving. Looking back to 2005 it looks like we average 1.69 per year. I should also say that I live outside the city.

That's the trail that my wife and I walk in the mornings, especially on weekends. She's always told me that she won't go if I'm not going...nervous about crossing paths with some creep. I hope that burglary suspect they have locked up is the guy.

If there was even need to average the murder rate to daily, or even shootings, I wouldn't want to live there.

I was transferred to Memphis in 1983 and stayed for two years. We lived in Germantown and it was safe and nice. I worked in downtown Memphis. Horrible, dangerous place to work.
