I learned to drive and back a boat in a 1969 chevy el camino with 3 on the tree. We (my wife's toy) had a Jeep that was a standard and I taught all 3 of the kids to drive it. Our youngest son has a Subaru WRX that is a standard, both he and his wife drive it. It is my DIL's daily ride most of the time. Is your son named Davey? There was an epic thread on here years ago debating a manual vs. automatic WRX.

I've never driven or ridden in a Jeep that wasn't a manual, but they were all all 10 + years old.

I like a standard, but haven't owned one in 30 years.
So ...... answer me this .....
Passenger cars mostly use automatic.
NASCAR cars use Standard.
Indy Cars use standard
IMSA Cars .... I'm watching them right now, but couldn't tell you what they use.
Drag Cars use Automatics, for the most part, from what I hear. Used to be standards, but with advancement in transmissions, I heard they went to auto about 30 years ago. Or, they just don't shift, and Rap It Out in one gear. I don't know.
From this, can you say that Standards are more specific and technical than autos, allowing for more fine-tuned racing?

Indy, F1 and Cart( are they still around?) all use assisted shifting using paddles. The only time you use the clutch it to start and stop. I imagine most of the IMSA cars do that too. Dragsters use different systems, the top fuelers use a progressive drag system. You release the clutch and a system releases it to keep the wheels from spinning. They get rebuilt every run.
What a standard gives you is some control using the engine to slow down your vehicle. The new auto's have many more gears and are so good at selecting shifting that they always are in the right powerband. Shift times are much shorter with an auto so you don't lose momentum and engine power between gears.

Yep, the Borg Warner T18/19 4 speed manual that Ford and GM used for years was terrible in this area, the difference from 3rd to 4th was a big gap. I hated pulling our 32' cattle trailer loaded with one of them, it was the worst with the 6.9 diesel. I still have our old 83' K30 with a 454 that we added a 2 speed box to it back then, and it gives each gear an overdrive for a total of 8 gears. It was a huge improvement, and it also let the engine run lower RPM at the then speed limit of 55. Before then, that engine was spinning fast.

From this, can you say that Standards are more specific and technical than autos, allowing for more fine-tuned racing? Automatic transmissions have advanced to the point they’re faster and more efficient than standards. I prefer driving standards because it’s less boring, more fun, and makes me more alert. They also tend to have less issues (literally manual, whereas automatics are all computers now) and there is something to be said for your window being broken but your car not stolen because thief’s don’t know how to drive stick anymore.

Most of my cars have paddle shifters on them, but are auto.
I wouldn't own another manual transmission

Manuals are about as popular as a rotary phone. Wouldn't doubt if a few of you old codgers on here still have one in your house. We still have a rotary phone hanging in the kitchen. used it till we dropped the house line a few years back. The wife and I taught all 3 of ours kids to drive a stick. Both my sons drive a stick shift today. One has a Jeep and the other has a Nissan Z350 convertible. The Z is fun to drive.

I will admit if you live in the big city and have a long daily commute to work you'd be a fool to drive a manual shift vehicle.Constantly working that clutch and shifter in rush hour traffic is a beating. Depends on the vehicle. My Jetta is pretty easy shifting and I've gotten to the point that I don't need to do a lot of shifting in traffic. If I need to drive Dad's 2500 Ram, it gets quite tiresome.

I once aspired to own the dream car trifecta of the automotive iconoclast: manual transmission wedded to a diesel engine inside a hatchback body. Would have achieved this via the VW Arteon if not for VW getting caught cheating on diesel emissions.
