I finally was able to find some BIG Rios that wanted to play! I had to wade across several spots and walk about a mile and then wade across one other spot to find a very nice fishing hole. The walk paid off. There were plenty of BIG Rios stacked in that area. The sky stayed overcast the whole time I was there which played a big factor in controlling the heat. It also helped the bite. Caught well over 50 nice Rios. The bite stayed active for three solid hours and I left them biting. Rounding out the catch of Rios were several nice bass and some spawning Bluegill. All fish were caught on ultralight tackle using the "Bait of Champions" worms. All of the Rios were in the 9 to 10 inch range. The biggest was 10.75". All fish were released to fight again. A great Rio catching day. It just don't get any better! fish

Side Note: I had noticed on several Rios that I had caught a Prolapse was coming out of their rectums. Was informed by a fish biologist that this was a Ovipositor that is common in Rios during their spawn. This is what contains the eggs that have either been laid or fixing to be laid. Was told this was completely harmless to the fish and is a natural reaction in some fish if overly excited that could be easily caused by being caught. Very interesting and nice to know. thumb

Just curious, do you ever keep any Rios to eat?

Thanks Bill, Curt0407, and F4Gator for the replies. cheers Bill: Rios are good eating fish. I personally do not eat them but have several friends who do. They all say they are very good eating. They also are easy to fillet. thumb

I remember catching them as a kid, but don't remember keeping them. I do remember catching them for trot line bait. We also bought bait size at the hatchery that used to be next to Palmetto State Park.

A lot of anglers use em for trout lines and cut bait. Catch some nice Flatheads! hooked

I can remember in the ole days digging them up to catch bluegill, bass and cats....
