when traveling up the Alaskan highway,we decided to take a side trip that involved leaving the Alaskan highway at Whitehorse and driving 331 miles to Dawson City where we spent the night then next day took the "top of the World" highway,crossed back into Alaska at Poker Creek then joined back up with Alaskan highway near Tok,Alaska.....you travel through really remote areas but the roads were good with mile after mile of beautiful views...Dawson City was a good place to spend the night and has several nice "mom and Pop" motels and restaurants plus good views of the Yukon river....

Is it paved?

the 331 miles from whitehorse to dawson city is paved. you could easily drive most of this highway at 70 mph if you chose to..........the 79 mile top of world highway is a fine crushed gravel road that is smooth and you can drive drive comfortably at 50-60 mph...very little traffic on either road and like the alaskan highway,they have cut the undergrowth and trees back probably 30 yards from the highway which reduces the danger of an animal jumping out in front of you....
