I always hear of people getting bass thumb from lippin' smaller bass and getting their fingers chewed up by the small teeth. I've personally never experienced it. I don't wear gloves or anything, and I lip 'em then release 'em.

Am I just not catching enough bass to get the privilege of experiencing bass thumb?

I get it after only a couple of fish. It takes a big one, or a large number for me to truly break skin and bleed. In my totally unscientific experience, it really depends on the individual, and how tough their skin is...

I bet for those with a few calluses on the fingers, it is harder to acquire...

Just curious, but what line of work are you in? Do you play a stringed instrument where the thumbs are toughened, or maybe work in the yard around your house? Hey, just found another one... Do you bowl in a league?

It's real prevalent in Mexico!
You can get it on Big Sam, Athens, Squaw Creek, and Possum Kingdom.
You can't get it on Ray Roberts !

One big one that’s angry or a bunch of fish in one day. Never gotten to the point that my thumb has bled. Usually just a little roughed up. I like it.

Bass thumb means the fish are too small. You gotta get gashes across your palm to be really having a good day.

Truth right here...I've had days where my inner palm and thumb look I took a belt sander to them. Those are the BEST trips.

small ones do it to me worse. You can't get your thumb inside of their "teeth" and if you catch a mess of them, they
tear the thumb up.

Best "injury" to evey have is bass thumb...........

After about 3 days of this; it begins to take the fun out of it. We try to prevent it from happening with tape and then gloves over the top. By the end of the week the roll of tape is gone.

I disagree... Get ahould of 7+ lbers... And they tear you up after 1 or two... Only reason I can say this is it happened in Mexico... Gloves are a MUST for me now down there

I get it a lot when I’ve had a good day. Sometimes I need to put on a sun glove or something when it gets bad. Then I know it’s a GREAT day.
