I just got a new rig dedicated for fishing heavy cover with frogs--7.5 ratio Lews reel, heavy 7' 3" rod with fast flex loaded with 50 lb braid and a 20 lb mono leader... I love this rig. It feels great, performs great, hasn't given me any problems (yet!). I do have other rigs for other lures and bait setups. But a few times now I've been in a situation where it would be faster to switch out the frog on that rig with some other lure (cover-punching jig or even a Texas rigged worm, for example) than going back to the truck and grabbing another rig... Would that be advisable, particularly with such heavy line loaded on this thing? With the 50/20 lines is it now 100% a heavy cover frogging jig and that's all it will be good for? Thanks.

You can punch with it, but you may find yourself snapping line on a Hookset. I don't like braid for up close fishing, and if you use it, it needs to be straight braid with a rod that has flex to it. I don't care for trig on a big heavy stick myself.

How about moving to clearer water and putting a less heavy lure on there like a worm or even something like a crankbait or chatterbait? Sure, the 50 lb might be overkill. But I wouldn't run the risk of ruining the reel or rod by doing that or anything, would I?

you proudly can't hurt the equipment even if you try. Having the right equipment is more comfortable, more enjoyable, and in most cases makes it easier.

You could use it for punching a heavy rig in grass or put on a leader for a heavy Tx. rig but from what you describe I would think the rod is too stiff for a crank bait.

Agreed I think itโ€™s too heavy for a crankbait but would work well for punching heavy grass and possibly a heavy swimbait

I do not see the point in using 20# leader in heavy cover with a Frog. The fish can't see that line. My partner used 50 # white Braid on Amistad for 10 years and caught just as many fish as I did with the green braid. I fish Mexico in extreme bushes.
- I have found that we loose more fish by getting wrapped up with sub-surface rigs using Braid, than we do with 25# Floro.
- Braid cuts into the wood quickly when you nail a fish in it.
- If I am going to use a rod/reel set up for multiple rigs; then I would go with 25 lb. Stren Mono..
- Original Stren Mono has no polymers to make it sink. No abrasion resistance. No low stretch. No low memory. No low visibility.
- Stren floats better than any of the others for top water around heavy cover.
- With pitching and flipping in 5 ft of heavy cover it doesn't matter if it sinks or not.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.

First thing is never use a leader with s frog. Straight braid always. I recommend 65lb. Can also be used for flipping heavy cover

Agree. It's hard to get the hook in them when using a weedless frog (you're trying to get that body to collapse so the hook penetrates), so the zero-stretch braid helps pull that off.

Agree with straight braid for frogs

50lb braid to 17lb CXX leader (which behaves like 20lb mono) is what I use for the following:
Stained water 1/2oz and heavier T rig
Stained water pitching and flipping
Stained water 1/2oz and heavier jigs
Stained water 1-2oz swimbaits
Stained water bigger topwaters
1/2oz and heavier wobble heads and shaky heads in deeper water
Lighter Arigs
1/2oz and heavier spinnerbaits and chatterbaits
Iโ€™m sure there are some im forgetting
