bullet20, you are right, snakebites are rather painless, they do draw blood, and some do hurt i.e. diamondback watersnakes and plainbellied water snakes(both of which will bite and chew) anything else wil just be like getting stuck with a needle. when i catch rat snakes, most of the time i get bit, but its a small price to pay if my neighbor was going to kill it otherwise.
and fishslayer, i understand what you are saying about moccasins and how aggressive they are, if you corner them or threaten their general area, they can become very offensive, meaning they will strike repeatedly, stand their ground, and sometimes come after you, when they get this defensive, there is sometimes nothing to do but kill them. but if i were to see it before it saw me, i would steer clear, because they are one of the few snakes that are extremely aggressive when confronted

I've also been bitten by a ratsnake. I initiated the contact to catch and relocate the snake. It was relatively painless. My advice to all is to wash the bite thoroughly in order to decrease the chance of infection.
Studies have indicated that snakes will follow the urine trail of small rodents in order to find food. The mouse pees. Pee gets in the belly fur. So the mouse leaves a pee trail. Snake follows the trail.
The point is that in a barn environment, keep the rodent traps set or the poison out and alot of the snake problem will go away.

I think i have only killed one snake in my whole life and i have been fishing ponds and lakes for over 20 years now.
The only snake that i think i ever killed fell out of a tree and landed on me when i was fishing on my boat on lake Austin after dark. I had no idea what type of snake it was but i can say this i sure did give my fishing buddy in the back seat one hell of a show and i did bust a $300 g loomis rod on that poor snake...... That was a funny story to tell the guys a G loomis when they asked what happened to the rod....
I didnt know I couldnt do that!

Kill them: regardless of what the tree huggers say. I kill them and don't care who don't like it. You can determine if it is poisonous or not after he is dead.
