Match the hatch is a common mantra, and one thought I've been scratching my head about is just what type of natural forage the mighty Senko is supposed to mimic. To me, the classic green pumpkin or watermelon color just looks like a big green worm, which is not something that seems to match anything I've seen in nature. But, there's no question that it flat out catches fish, and is something I've resorted to many times this summer.

So, what type of natural forage do you think the Senko mimics? Worms? Leeches? Bluegill? Crawfish? Random unknown creature that is just odd enough to almost always entice a bass to bite?

It doesn’t exactly imitate anything. It gives the impression of something that is edible and fits in a fish’s mouth.

Having colors that are similar to something the fish eat seems like a good plan, but I had a lot of bass eat a bubblegum color slug-o back in the day. Bass occupy a certain class level of predator in the water. They eat what they can get that is not hard to catch. I think this is where the shimmer/shake comes in, not a lot of action, like something dying. Something dying can't flee very easily. If it looks like it might be food, they'll try it - and may get hooked before they spit it out.

I think the action imiiates a wounded fish, or baitfish and they can sense that wobble every time it flutters going down in the water column. Now someone whose won big money on them enlighten us as to why its the best.

Yes it is! Arguably one of the greatest largemouth bass lures of all time is the invention of the “plastic worm”. Been diving in many freshwater lakes and I have never seen a big ole 6”-12“ worm(snake) hopping off the bottom. What do all soft plastics(and many lures) represent to a bass? Simply “Something to eat”!

add that to my list of questions if I ever have a conversation with a bass....
my first question would be "can you see florocarbon line as well as mono" and my second would be "does putting salt in plastic worms make you want to eat them more than unsaled ones"?

I don't know but they sure as heck catch a lot of us fishermen!!!!

Bubblergum (or pink) is my favorite color for a stick bait. I also think that it is just "something to eat." I am still trying to figure out how Strike King knew that bass were coffee fanatics.

Maybe they learned from the drug cartels that use coffee to hide the scent of drugs from dogs.
