We’re on vacation on the James River in Missouri and my son caught this. Any ideas? [Linked Image]

He’s also wearing out the small mouth, black bass, and sunfish. Catching everything on fluke jrs, rooster tails, and tiny cranks.

Looks like a rock bass, could also be a flier but I think they’re generally further southeast.

It is a rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris). They were introduced into Texas and are found in the San Marcos River and other rivers in the central part of the state.

That IS a weird fish!! Mouth of a bass with fins and spots like a crappie. Cool fish for your son to catch!

A spot he just caught he’s pretty proud of. Don’t mind the pepper in his teeth. Lol

I use to catch them in the larger ponds in the woodlands. Game warden told me its a Dartmouth and good eating. Still released it. They get big for panfish

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!
