There is a place on our lake with good white bass fishing under big lights at night in 20 feet of water. I recently bought a fishfinder and think I am seeing lots of white bass between 15 and 18 feet. Is there any way to catch them? I briefly tried jigging a large spoon last night in that depth range but didn't get any bites.

We do catch them near the surface with spoons. It seems like there are many more, and perhaps bigger, white bass hanging around closer to the bottom.

Back before they put Stripers in Texoma, there used to be a floatilla of boats that would anchor over the river channel at night and catch hundreds of sandies on minnows. Don't see that much anymore .... not sure why.

There also used to be a guide who would fish with a set-up of five maribu jigs of a variety of colors. They specialized in night fishing on Tawakoni, by the dam. They said that most customers got tired and wanted to go in about 4:00am. Said that the fishing really started picking up about then, if they only would stay.

There used to be a Party Boat (head boat) on Tawak and Ray Hubbard that would fish 30 - 40 people at once, all night long.

Anyone else remember the old days.

Not sure why they stopped, but if it worked then, it should still work.

Try live bait. White bass will take shiners really well. Shad or even ghost minnows will work.

The one I remember was Carroll Rommell and Cerco jigs.
He had a booth at the boat show and sold his jigs for $5.00
a dozen. That was back when we had a real boat show, not
the silly show they have now. He would fish at night with 5
jigs tied on about a foot apart. We use to catch a lot of fish
using his setup.

Good Luck,
Bozz

Fish

Most bait right now is very small. I would try a crappie jig or live bait if possible.

My go to bait for lights is 3/8oz rooster tail in yellow or white, count down to bottom then steady medium retrieve. If after a few casts no takers try 2 less on the count. If that fails let it hit bottom then 4 or 5 turns of reel handle and let fall to bottom, repeat. You can also jig it like a slab, rip it up 3 or 4' keep contact with bait on fall. If bite is good cut off one hook of treble

I'd try a tail spinner. Academy sells one that I use a lot. It has a lot of vibration from the spinner on the back.

I used to fish for Speckled Trout under lights along the coast. I had great luck with glow in the dark paddle tail plastics. I'd definitely give it try if none of the other tips work.

I was just thinking about those jigs the other day and I couldn't remember the name. The worked great under the old sealed beam in styrofoam fishing lights. I definitely remember picking up a few packs at the boat show each year.

So, it is possible to catch white bass deep at night. I just need to find the right combination of lure and retrieve?
