I have not been to Lake Fairfield since 2016. The last time I went, the water was ugly and the entire lake was circled by reeds. After reading some posts, I decided to make a trip over there. It was a beautiful, sunny morning and as soon as I got to the ramp, I saw the vegetation people have been reporting. This vegetation is definitely hydrilla. It extends about 40 feet out from the shore line in front of the reeds. Some of these shore lines have hydrilla that stops at a nice, clean line. In other places, there is hydrilla with various other types of vegetation in front of it. Overall, the water looked clean and clear.

I don't think anyone has stocked any bass in this lake since around 2011. It appears to me that the shock to the system of not having an operating power plant has worn off. If this lake can be stocked at a decent interval, this could be a great lake. Included in the success of this lake would be "control", NOT DEVASTATION, of hydrilla growth. Let the @^%! grass carp stay in Conroe. Keeping the cast net guys out would help, too.

To those that consider Lake Fairfield an already great lake, remember, this is just my $.02 opinion.

Good fishing!

I fished for 5 hours from my Triton. I started out throwing top waters, a spinnerbait, and a swimming fluke on hydrilla edges. No luck on those, so I switched to a flat-sided crankbait. On about the 5th cast, I caught one over 4. Nothing else for about 2 hours when I had another bass take my crank about 5 feet from the boat and ran straight at me. It was a decent looking fish but it happened so fast, that I never got a hook set. Switched to a bluegill colored square bill. Caught a fat #2-6. Nothing more for about an hour when I caught a #4-4. Not a great day but I learned a lot. I think I should have tried a weightless fluke. I will next time.

TPWD - stock this lake, then leave it alone!

I did not think of this until today; I did not see one cast-netter while I was out there. The last time I was there is 2016. They were everywhere. Back then, there was an assembly line of women cleaning fish at the boat ramp, as flat bottomed boats brought in cooler after cooler. I don't think that will be happening in the near future. The bank is covered in hydrilla; no throwing a cast net in that stuff! Good!

Rayzor...Sounds like a decent day for this time of year. I am guessing that since to Tilapia died off that there would not be near as many cast netters...

Back in 2016, there were tilapia to be caught everywhere along the shoreline. The guys just walked along the barren shorelines and threw their nets. You can't walk along those shore lines now. That's why Fayette is being inundated with netters. There is no hydrilla at FCL.

According to Google maps, it's a 2 hr. 25 min. trip for me. That doesn't include a stop at Buc-ee's on the trip north and a stop somewhere else on the way south. I purposefully did not say anything about my fishing in my first post because I didn't want anyone to freak out. I have high hopes for this lake. I hope "someone" doesn't screw things up.

It just depends on if the property is sold or the lease for the state park property is renewed

The lake has a small watershed and the utility used to pump water in. No one has the resources to do that anymore. So in a drought year it will be drastic. I think the netters we’re providing a service in removing tilapia. A waterbody can only have so much biomass and short of removal near 100% of the living things in that lake would have been tilapia in the end.
