Anyone have any tips on fishing this area with a spinning rod? I'm not really into fly fishing. Headed up there the first week of August.
Thanks

illegal in most streams, check where you want to fish as some are also barbless etc.

for catching fish, go down to silverthorne and turn north, plenty of well marked pull outs for the blue river.

yellow coachdog roostertail in 1/8 and 1/4oz. and a few mepps to mix it up but the coachdog is killer on the trout.

lived there over 15 yrs. and for simple access, catchability the blue is about the best. if you want to fish the colorado just keep going north to kremmling, go east and same for the colorado, plenty of public access and fish to be had. same lure.

these come in brass and silver blades, try to get some of ea. and brass with clouds, silver with sun.

Rapala Countdown 7 or floater in Rainbow trout...there are a lot of Brown trout around there..cast across creek or river and let current sweep your lure into the holes ..other productive areas are the slack looking water above and below riffle or rapid water areas...buy several..the rocks will take a few if the water is to high to retrieve with waders..or get one of the clear casting bobbers/floats and rig an olive or black wooly booger a couple of feet below and fish it the same way..both also work on the small lakes around there..

The blue is one of the more technical fisheries in the state on account of it being a year round fishery. Smaller headwaters are where you will find the better fishing because the fish stay under ice a lot of the year. You should also check local regulations because as far as I am aware some waters are fly fishing fishing only. Summertime is when fish are looking up and you really need to fly fish to catch them consistently.

I would recommend downloading the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Fishing app for your phone. It's super handy and will show you access points and lots of other useful info such as how easy the sites are to get to, if fish are stocked, if there are special regulations, etc.

Not intending to start an argument; I'm not a freshwater trout fisherman. I prefer saltwater trout. Why does a barb matter on a freshwater trout, but not any other fresh water fish? I've never heard the reasoning behind it.

a lot of the rivers are gold medal streams/rivers, in nm they are called quality waters, special regs for certain stretches and no barbs is one of the main rules, no live bait etc.

no barb makes it a lot easier to release and a bunch of stretches are cpr.

pretty much any of the maintained pull outs/parking areas will have the regs. for the immediate stretch of water they are for, some areas you have to be careful of how far up or down stream you go due to different regs for that stretch. everywhere I fished was spinning or fly, no live baits except for some of the lakes, power bait works just fine for bank fishin.

Talk about taking all the fun out of fishing, I'm glad I don't live Colorado. Still don't understand the barbless thing though. I hope you are still enjoying that awesome blue Champ too Hop!
