Hey guys, longtime fisherman and boat owner looking to buy my first kayak and I have a couple of questions:

I am in the DFW area. Are there any kayak shops where I could look at several and maybe actually paddle one? Cabela’s, Dicks, Academy have almost nothing. Been watching lots of YouTube videos but wouldn’t buy based on that.

Second, am I right to assume if I don’t get pedal drive in my first one I will want to trade it in soon? Or do some of you prefer paddling?

I am and always will be a paddler. Pedals are a good option but when shoot hits the fan your paddle will always get you back. You should be fimilar with the idea moving parts fail and never fail when its easy. No matter what boat you get, learn to paddle. As far as shops, mariner sails, anglers pro tackle are a couple. Both places have great people.

Might also try Kayak Instruction Inc. He rents kayaks out of paddle point park on lake lavon. Also sells kayaks.

Thanks for the replies. I am assuming the pedal systems are removable in case you want the option to paddle, say in skinny water. Is that correct?

Yes, the drive systems can be removed. Most come with an insert to fill the drive hole (to reduce drag). However, most peddle kayaks are relatively wide and do not make great padelers.

I agree with Christians recommendations. My personal preference is Mariner Sails, but both are great. Mariner Sails does test rides almost every Saturday. All you have to do is pick a couple and meet them at an area lake on the next Saturday. Last time I went, they showed up with 8 to 10 kayaks for folks to test ride.
