Has anyone replaced an HVAC system themselves? I have a split heat pump system that's 23 years old. It works well but I may have to replace at some point and was wondering the difficulty and cost of DIY vs paying to have it replaced.

unless you have a license for the freon and gas hookups NO!

you can't buy freon without the license.

as for the gas, well I will let you guess what could go wrong.

same goes for all electric, unless you know what you are doing it is not a diy project.

It's an electric system. Could you not install it and have a licensed person add the freon?

Also, isn't it refrigerant?

can you braze copper?

are you competent in electrical hookups?

know how to size the cut out at the exterior unit?

unless they have changed how it works you most likely can not even buy the unit, no supplier I have ever dealt with will sell to the general public.

freon is refrigerant, it is supposed to be captured and either returned the the unit or taken and disposed of with special machines (not that everyone does that tho).

short answer is, I would never recommend taking on that job unless you are capable and have experience in working around them.

do something wrong and house burns down insurance won't cover it either, not worth the risk.

not trying to rain on your parade but save you some serious headaches and problems, it will cost double or more to have someone come fix it if not done right.

after spending 30 yrs. in construction, custom home builder for the last 15 or so of that, I am just telling you the facts. hvac is not a good diy project for multiple reasons.
you can get after it all you want but when it comes time to run copper and charge the system you probably should have someone lined up that is willing to put their license on the line to finish it for you because that is what it will take.

Just had our entire outside and inside units replaced today...3.5 ton 16 seer comfortmaker...It was well worth the money to have them do it. I am not inclined to do any type of work with electricity short of changing out a switch or a light fixture...beyond that and someone licensed can do it. The inside unit was 45 years old...outside was 12 years old. It was able to get the house down to 69 degrees in about 3 hours and cycles on and off perfectly even in this heat.

I would not, and I consider myself mechanically advanced.

I have a good friend in the heating A/C business. He is constantly telling me about the calls he gets from people that have unlicensed installers put units brought up from Mexico on their house. Then they expect him to come in & clean up the mess and try to turn it as "warranty" or cut them a low price. It usually doesn't end well for the homeowner.
