Since all of the kayak access points on Lady Bird and Lake Pflugerville were closed (for my protection of course) and getting on Lake Georgetown in a kayak on the 4th of July weekend is darn near suicidal I was short on fishing options. Decided to visit my nemesis, the only lake that skunked me last year, a lake I really, really don't like...Brushy Creek.
Put in at 06:05 am. The water is hot...88 degrees according to my Lowrance. It's low. It smells bad. It was dirty. It was full of algae balls that I'm guessing are caused by the runoff from the Avery Ranch Country Club on the south side of the lake. Fished until 10:30. Started by heading west along the north side, so I could fish that side of the lake before the folks fishing the bank showed up. (There aren't many good bank fishing spots at Brushy Creek Lake, so when someone is fishing from then I give them wide berth, I can fish the whole lake in my kayak, they're stuck on one of the few decent spots on the bank.) No joy. Went under the Palmer Lane bridge. The creek is very shallow, under a foot in some spots. Caught three small bluegill from downed trees along the south bank. When the water got too shallow to paddle I turned around and fished the south bank of the lake. Caught another half dozen small bluegill (the biggest may have been 5") and one bass under a pound.
Headed back to the ramp and called it a day. All bluegill were caught on Emerald Shiner Gulp Alive Minnows. The bass was on a Matzuo Nanocrank in black shiner.
Not a great day of catching, but the creek past the bridge is pretty and nicely shaded, and I didn't get skunked.

Great report. I had plans to fish Brush Creek Reservoir in Cedar Park later this week. I think I will be going somewhere else after reading your post. Thanks for the heads up. Side Note: Glad you did not get skunked.

I wouldn't drive far to fish the lake in Cedar Park. Perhaps the creek itself in Round Rock...though I've never fished that part so I can't say for sure. The fish density in the lake just doesn't seem to be there, they should be easy to find, there isn't very much in the way of cover, but this lake baffles me. One of the guys I work with fishes the dam regularly and he swears there are some good sized bass holding off the dam, but they're difficult to catch because of the fishing pressure. Your results may vary.

The creek in Round Rock is pretty fun though I haven't been yet this year. In is clear as gin and offers what I would describe as sight fishing opportunities. The rios look like little sheepshead sitting on their beds. The water also seems much cooler than other area streams probably due to a few springs and a good canopy providing shade for much of its length.

Nice post. Never fished Brushy Creek or the reservoir before. By the what has been posted the creek would probably be the best.
Side Note: The LBL is hard to beat in the Austin Area.
