I destroyed my lower unit at Fork. The dealer wants to replace it with a lower unit manufactured by Jasper verses the Mercury lower unit. Does Jasper make a good product?

If insurance is paying for it, I would recommend sticking with Mercury. If it is coming out of your own pocket, I know you have to weigh the pros and cons. Even then, I would still buy an original equipment lower unit.

However, if it is a rebuilt Mercury lower unit, then it is a toss up. Rebuilts and aftermarkets never last as long as a new lower unit.

Avoid the Jasper lower unit. I bought one after blowing up the lower unit on my flats boat, and it lasted about 3 months.

go with the merc... insurance has to make you whole... don't let them pull a fast one.

Two wheels or two reels, either way I'm happy.

Thanks guys. I called the dealer and they're quoting using the Mercury lower unit.

This process has been a nightmare. The Triton dealer has had my boat since May 2nd and I'm sure it'll be a couple more weeks before I get it back. I was hoping to have it back for the last Basschamps-Central tourney on Choke, so now we have to scramble for a replacement boat.

If its a Merc 225, I have a spare lower unit I can loan you or sell to you. It is original, never been rebuilt.

I just found a deal that I couldn't pass up. Since I have been through several lower units myself, I thought what the hell. Now that I am running a Minn Kota, I don't need a spare trolling motor, so I thought I would get a spare lower unit. smile

Mercury also builds a reman if the insurance company will not pay for a brand new one. They come with the same one year warranty.

It's funny that you mention Minn Kota. I just had to replace a Motorguide! This sport we all love can drain your wallet very fast!

My insurance is picking up the tab for the lower unit so that helps out big time.

Sorry - it was just a joke. Let's not mess up your post with a trolling motor debate!

Well I heard from State Farm today. Apparently I have a clause in my policy that allows State Farm to pay for the least expensive fix. I do not have the right to OEM parts. Having said that, they want to replace my lower unit with a remanufactured merc lower unit. Can I trust a remanufactured lower unit? This is all new to me.

Thanks for the help.
