This stuff is in most of the “sugar free” candies. Does anyone know how this affects blood sugar?

It doesn’t for me, carbs do though. I used to eat sugar free candy and it jacked my sugar levels, then I realized one piece had 20 or 30 grams carbs.

I don’t handle sugar alcohols well.

Bloating, gas, cramps and river of death diarrhea.

Doesn’t kill me...just makes me wish it did.

My understanding is they are less absorbed in the digestive tract resulting in less effect on blood glucose a common one is sorbitol which if you are not used to it will cause flush . They are used in conjunction with artificial sweeteners as they are not very sweet.

You and 95% of the population once you eat a decent amount. Steer clear or you’ll wish you did! flush_2

Most of those candies are sweetened with malitol.

Too much....and you risk diarrhea river of death.

I’ve got a horrible story about a young couple on their honeymoon, two boxes of sugar free macadamia nut clusters and a race down the hall to our tiny cruise ship bathroom. Yes, elbows were thrown by the newlyweds.

I’ll never eat that stuff again! flush

I ate a whole bag of brachs sugar free cinnamon candy and nearly s myself to death. 1 or 2 at a time. When you count carbs you subtract sugar alcohols as they have minimal glycemic index affect. So 40 carbs minus 38 sugar alcohol is 2 net carbs for example. Eat at your own risk. Google up sugar free gummy bears and read reviews.....

When I was 12, I got into a bag of my great aunt’s diabetic candy. Literally ate the entire bag. Spent the entire day in the bathroom like that scene in Dumb and Dumber.

If you are going to eat products with sugar alcohol , be sure to read ingredients . The one you want is Erythritol . It does not have the
digestive side effects of sorbitol , malitol and the rest.

good luck

You are correct.

I went to sugar and carb free diet last year. Sometimes I will have a treat and eat Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, made by Lily's. It has the Erythritol in it and doesn't have gas side effects.
