Bowfin are a prehistoric looking fish found in east Texas. Lake O the Pines and Caddo lake would be a good place to start. They are aggressive predators and will hit lures and live bait.

Bowfin they are prehistoric I worked on a pond one year, as it went dry i would scoop out the bottom with a box blade. I did this to all the pond but one spot, and that spot went dry but not enough for me to clean it out with the tractor. It started to rain and fill up my pond. Now I could stock it with bait perch or what ever I wanted. After the rain quit and about 2 weeks went by I walked out to my pond and to my suprise there was a black pod of baby fish swimming around in that clean pond and under that bunch of babies was their mom a Bowfin. After I looked it up I knew why,a Bowfin when the water goes dry can cover themselves in mud and can live in that mud until the next rain. A Shotgun blast took care of the Fry and the mother bowfin.

I caught more bowfin than I did bass when I went to fork last in the spring. (Not hard, only caught 3 bass.) We call em grinnel. I suppose it is the same fish as a bowfin.

Bowfin (Amia calva) have different common names depending on the area of the country. They are commonly called grinnel, mud fish, dogfish, choupique, cypress trout, cotton fish, brindle, blackfish, and Lots of other names locally. They are also sometimes called snakeheads, although snakeheads are a different invasive species. As a side note, they get really mad when you shock them from an electrofishing boat.

I was going to suggest Fork as well. I dont fish Fork very often, maybe 1 time every 2-3 years and I've caught bowfin almost every time.

They are also in the Sabine River, usually in the back water sloughs. Just FYI, they fight like crazy and can tear up lightweight gear. The biggest one I have caught was at Lone Star Lake.

Navasota River, Lake Limestone, and private ponds & sleughs are a few places. If you clean them, there meat works like Gator Gar. It is chewy & tastes similar to shrimp, just like Gator Gar. But do not cut the meat into small pieces, until ready to fry or it will basically dissapate in the water. Always freeze in water in ziplocs, in big strips.

I have caught a few of them during bass fishing. I would go places most normal folks would not ho in my boat. Way up in shallow and almost stagnant water. I used a spinnerbait with chartreuse and maybe orange blades. The grinnell are Los of fun to catch because they fight more hard than snybgish I know of. My louisiana friends say y hff ey ate good on the table also. I teleasedctge ones I caught alive.

I thought I had the next Fork record?? The spinnerbait was unusable after he got it. 30 years ago. I believe that was the Minnow Bucket at Lake Fork.

We must have been there around the same time. 30 years (give or take) I did the same thing. I just knew I had the new state record LM! My spinner bait became trash as well.
He is truly a sick individual.
