My wife got me a 10' Ugly Stik bigwater spinning rod as an early Father's Day gift. I'm planning on pier fishing mostly (Bob Hall). Any advice on a good spinning reel to go with it and what size for (hopefully) some larger catches. I'm hearing a lot about the Daiwa BG and am impressed with the price. Any feedback is appreciated.

Excellent choice, I have a BG3000 and it is wonderful. A 5000 size would be great for a pier, maybe even a 6500, but a 5000 should do fine. The ones I have used compare favorably to Shimano stradics in the 4000-5000 size range, at half the price, and reviews support that comparison on big fish.

I really like the Penn Fierce reels, I have three of them.

Penn Fierce 5000 or 6000 would make a great combo.
