Are crawfish style baits viable in ponds? Specifically the type you find in neighborhoods? You know, some natural banks, but mostly mown grass around the edges?

Yes. I use soft plastic crawfish and crawfish flies all the time in every body of water (ponds, creeks, river and lakes) I fish and they work everywhere.

Yep a easy way to tell if your local pond has crawfish is to look on the banks normally the bird will eat them and leave the shells on the bank. I've had good luck with jigs and speed vibes in ponds.

Same. A lot of times you'll see just the claws from where the birds shook them off. If I have not seen claws I don't usually fish with crawdads.

Crawfish are pretty much everywhere. Almost certainly in all neighborhood ponds.

To piggyback on this question, is there a particular color crawfish that is commonly found, specifically in north Texas/DFW lakes?
The tackle sections at stores carry many different colors, green, red, brown, etc. I figure it’s probably best to imitate the color of the local crawfish as closely as possible, but I have only personally seen one on the shore recently. It was just a shell and it was all white. Not sure if Albino crawfish or sun bleached from sitting there so long.

I had never seen a white crawfish before, so I had no idea if that was a thing or not lol. I figure someone was either using part of it as bait or some bird or animal was eating it and probably just bleached white from the sun.

If you search for photos of the top 10 bass ever caught - most were caught on crawfish. Crawfish and bass have an inverse relationship - both are super-predators. In the daytime, the bass looks for crawfish and they are candy to bass. At night, the crawfish looks for bass or any other fish they can swarm and they can shred a fish in no time flat. So in addition to being a food source - bass really don't like crawfish and will attack them.

There are tons of them around pond banks after a big rain. Gotta go at night.
