How important is it to index the ultrex. This is my second ultrex and I didn’t have to do it to the first one

I've never indexed mine. I have installed the heading sensor though.

Indexing is way different than calibrating the compass/heading sensor.

Indexing has to do with finding the exact center between maximum left and right turning in degrees. If it isn’t correct, the motor will turn too far in one direction and hit a restriction in the other, cancelling spot lock.

I did it on mine. Wasn't hard and took about 15 minutes. I didn't even think about it till I was on the lake the first time after installing it and was toe up going forward. After I put the boat back in storage I just busted out the installation manual and went after it. Just don't forget to re-tension the steering cable screws when you are done. All you need is a Philips screwdriver.
