Taking my 9 & 13 yr old sons May 15th- 16th, asking for advice. What should we be fishing for & Setups?

Thanks in advance!

If they are new to fishing, just keep it simple. Live shrimp and a popping cork. Difficult to bottom fish with kids as they will get snagged multiple times and start losing interest. I personally prefer taking my kids with live bait under the pier lights at night.

Go about 1/3 of the way out on the jetty and fish on the ocean side. Use a piece of shrimp, squid, or cut-bait on the bottom for a variety of species. A 3/4 gold spoon will be good for mackerel, ladyfish, and jacks. Be careful on the jetty rocks if they are wet. They can be as slick as ice. You can catch bigger fish at the end of the jetty but it is a long way down to the end.

Pier make be better but jetties are more fun. They can always run down the beach if they get bored.

As mentioned go about 1/3rd the way down and fish the beach side. Hopefully water is clear enough they can see some fish. Go on the earliest boat!

PB flathead 34.5 lbs - I know it's small but it was still the record for Lake Travis when I caught it!
PB Blue 58.5 lbs jugline 43.5 lbs on R&R which was the other Lake Travis record when caught.

I think the popping cork advice is good for the kids. For you though try this for bigger fish snag free (how to tie it):

Good luck teaching the kids and be careful on the jetty.

Iā€™m glad you had a good experience. The snapper may have been a gray snapper. thumb
