Ok, so I made the trek to the lake yesterday morning EARLY so I could be OTW for first light to take advantage of the Shad Spawn............Got to the spot where I thought they would be popping (well known Island point near deep water where a BASS pro may have caught bunches of them last year.......yes on Fork)
Shad popping everywhere (I mean EVERYWHERE), birds everywhere..........completely slick water, no wind.
I threw under them, over them, behind them, in front of them, shallower than them, deeper than them.........I threw frog, walking bait, swim jig, spinnerbait, jerkbait............nothing. A school of whites made an appearance for a while but no largemouth at all.
Other than "they just didn't feed at that time at that spot yesterday" which would make me feel better if that is the answer........what am I missing?
With this Covid business, I am actually getting to spend some time fishing now. (can't wait for retirement!) You guys helped me big time during the spawn. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Tommy
PM me to let me know how it was!

I did no good yesterday either. Fished just about all day. Finally managed 2 small, and I mean small, ones before I knocked off for the day. Caught them on a weightless fluke.

Bass are not always there! Usually they are but if your not seeing Bass boiling surface and chasing- sometimes they are not on those particular shad. But I would go back and check it the next Morning if I could. Bait selection sounded Good. Try and under spin with 3.5" swim bait.. Good Luck

Unless you are seeing the bass blowing up on the shad they may not be there. Keep moving if its not happening at your first stop.

It happens sometimes. We got to our spot late Saturday during Media and a boat was already there. I watched this dude just absolutely crush them. we got in pretty close to him but not too close and we only caught about 5 off that point. He caught prolly 20 that I saw. So sometimes its a bait color or the presentation. But the bait we were throwing had been crushing them. So who knows. They are fish......and stubborn at that sometimes! lol.

Here is a little trick I learned as a striper guide. Take a 5ft cast net and 5 gallon bucket. Catch a net full of shad while they are running the bank. Dump them in the bucket. Take your dip net and get a dip net full and smack them on the deck. Then start throwing them out away from the boat. They will flop on top stunned and its a calling card for all predator fish. Easy target easy dinner.

I would add the smaller yellow magic and a weightless fluke to what you try next go round. Its been hit or miss for me as well, so I focus on the banks that have a bird or two on them, seems to raise the odds

Unless you are seeing the bass blowing up on the shad they may not be there. Keep moving if its not happening at your first stop. I'd probably go with this info. Fishing the shad spawn can be really aggravating. You see shad EVERYWHERE but sometimes the bass just aren't there. Or they aren't big enough to eat your bait.

Recently targeted a shad spawn bite and couldn't get bit on the buzzbait. Switched to a chatterbait and caught a few. Should have switched to the chatterbait earlier.

Sometimes the bass aren't feeding on the shad spawn. If the bass are there I've had luck recently with a 1/4 oz white spinnerbait and a 1/4 oz chrome/blue trap.

Throw your favorite T/R plastic in there a few times. It’s worked for me. Chatter bait and lipless cranks also

I've been using this 3" bait from savage gear. Used them them to catch baby tarpon this past winter in south florida. They worked great for bass when nothing else similar would. Most wiggly little bait I've seen.

We fished the shad spawn on GV yesterday morning. Used SB, CB, and yellow magic. Wore 'em out but never had anything bigger than 2.5lbs, Nice smallies, too. It was fun but was looking for Mrs.Big. She musta been at East Fork!
