 36v Trolling motor do's and don'ts

I'm new to trolling motors and a guy wants to sell me a 36v Minnkota Maxxum 101/US. My question is will it harm the motor to run only 2-batteries ? My boat is small and the weight of 3-batteries is a little too much.

You don't get to choose how many batteries you use - with that trolling motor. With 2 batteries, It won't work at all, or you'll burn it up. There is one new model out that is configurable for 24 or 36V, but that's a very new thing. It doesn't apply to 99% of trolling motors. Tell us what boat you have. A 12V TM may be more appropriate than 24V as well. If you look at the MinnKota website, they have a guide for what motor you likely need.

You can get very creative to find room for a 3rd battery. But yes you have to have 3 or you will regret it.

You can run it on 2 batteries. However, the performance is not as good and you do risk damaging the TM. However, I see people doing it very frequently. It would be better to use the correct voltage to the correct TM.

They do make 18volt batteries. So, yeh, run two of those. And don’t forget to get an 18volt charger to charge them.
