I've used all types and found that on a kayak they work the best. I make mine about 6' long with a spike on one end and then a float attached to the other.
I use the stringer in conjunction with a cooler. If I have to move a long distance the fish then go into the ice chest. Short distances I just lay the stringer at my feet.
The cable type makes the task easy as they just slide right off the stringer into the ice chest.

Thanks Jimbo, it this they type you are talking about?

G2 Stringer

Basically what I'm talking about.
The plastic coated cable doesn't kink or twist and knot up like a nylon or rope stringer, and the fish slide up and down with ease.
You can use a float or just a loop on the end without the float. A short piece of pool noodle and a trip to the hardware store and you can buy the parts to make up your own.
Good project for the homebound.

Over the years I've had some interesting things happen using a stringer.
Everything from having the stringer come loose and losing several good fish, to having a gator pull a chain stringer and break a link and leaving me just a small section of chain attached to the boat, to having a large snake attached to a fish as I retrieved the stringer to add a fish.
If you fish enough, there will be times where using a stringer is your only option, but like I said, it can make life interesting at times.

The one thing that makes me a bit nervous at the FW Nature Center is having a stringer of fish attached to my kayak and a gator grabbing it and pulling my kayak over and dumping me in the water next to the gator who then decides surf and turf would make a nice meal.

Lol I hear ya I feel the same way. Porpoise are also bad about blowing by making a swipe at a stringer especially if there's trout on it. They likely won't bother you but can knock you off the yak. I know some guys tie a piece of mono between the stringer and where they connect it to the kayak to avoid getting knocked off the yak if they get hit.

You get out of it what you put into it!

At first I used a typical nylon stringer but when there were several fish attached it would really mess with the kayak's tracking when paddling. So I built a stringer using a length of rope, clips from a metal stringer and a large float like those on wade fishing stringers. I tied a dozen loops onto the rope a few inches apart and attached the clips to the loops. I tied the float on one end of the rope and a small carabiner on the other end. Kayak tracks fine even when stringer is full of fish.

For years, Ive just used an old soft cooler I dont care about and a couple of frozen soda bottles filled with water. I generally keep just enough fish for a few meals and the medium coolers work fine. If Im keeping cat fish I snip the 3 hard fins so they wont poke the bag or me for that matter. Im big on icing the keepers asap.
