I went around the south side of Grapevine today and saw several places that looked possible to park and pull your kayak to the water other than boat ramps.

Do the parks frown on doing this?

Thanks

I avoid ramps altogether unless they are the only way to access the water.
I've found that boaters even myself, tend to be agitated when a kayaker takes up a boat ramp when they could easily load or unload off to the side.
Yes, you have just as much right to the ramp, but c'mon, it's borderline rude in my opinion.

Just one more cast!

The lake close to me most of the ramps are closed because of high water but in driving around I saw parking lots I guess for picnic areas that would be just a short drag to the water. Just not sure if the authorities frown on using them to launch from.

I've never had a problem.

I checked with the Corps a while back about being able to launch my kayak from a park whose ramp was closed but the park was open.
They indicated that was fine and even said they did not want vehicles on the ramp but me walking my kayak there was fine.
They had no issues.
The attendant at the park was originally not going to let me in with my kayak thinking I would just drive off road to get closer to the water or over flooded pavement.
When I explained I had a cart and would stay on dry pavement the attendant was happy.
They do not want you to do anythng which can damage the facilities.
Launching a kayak off a publicly accessible shore is fine.

Thanks Ocelot, most of the places have either a pipe or cable divider in the lots so I can just back up to it and unload over the top of them and wheel over to the water. I hope to try it next week sometime. smile

That is completely acceptable.

As a matter of fact that's how I launch probably 90% of the time

NEVER contact the authorities
always ask for forgiveness
not permission

I was at Mustang Park at Benbrook a few years back and the ramps were closed due to high water. The first ramp had a barrier put in front of it. My Outback was on top of my car and I don't believe I had a cart with me. I was just going to move the barrier, pull down and unload, then put the barrier back when I was done. But there was an attendant down the way by the camp ground entrance. So I asked him and he said it was fine as long as I put the barrier back.
