Yes, I have. Every brain injury is a little different and you must have patience. The brain doesn't heal like the rest of the body and sometimes you have to learn new ways of accessing old information. Find the ways that she's weak and try to find ways to specifically work on that one thing. With Val, she lost about a year's worth of memories and her short term memory was messed up. So we would sing old songs, I was constantly poking her to help me remember things, and specifically would work on pulling memories from different inputs. Not just straight from memory, but accessing all the senses, taste, smell, touch, motion, sight, etc.

Brain injuries can change a person on a fundamental level. Just be patient and understanding and help them work through it.

Ditto - several years ago. One of my therapists recommended a TBI survival book “Waking The Tiger - Healing Trauma” which might be a good read for you to provide some insightful perspective. For me as a patient, coping with my new reality was and will always be an issue - particularly the memory gaps...

I'm sorry to hear about the accident, but glad she is able to come home.

My father had a fall from a ladder when he was 66. He had a similar surgery, removing 5 subdural hematomas. He was in the hospital for a couple of weeks, and then a rehab facility for about a month. The amazing thing is that his brain continued to heal. The neurologist told us that the brain actually rewires itself, bypassing damaged tissue. He had a lot of prayers and care that I am confident got him through it.

Dad turned 91 last month, and is living independently. Other than the scar, you would never know he had been through a pretty severe brain injury.

Keep the faith, and please let me know if I can provide any other information about our experience.

I went full tourette syndrome on myself when I first had the problem. Scared the hell out of my wife the first time I went off on myself. Never directed it out at anyone else, but got help. Now I laugh when I get up, walk to another room, and stand there trying to remember why I went there. LOL

May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!

Wow. I have been busy today getting her settled into our place temporarily. So far so good. Just now catching up on this post. What a bunch of awesome stories, experiences, input and support. This is the what the TFF and OT are all about. Thank you. Humbly. Thank you.

She is doing good. She didn’t want to come here, but said tonight it was the right thing to do to be safe. I think she‘ll get more comfortable with it in a couple of days. If not, I’ll smoke a brisket with some 407 rub and she won’t want to leave!

Thank you, again, for all the great insights. It’s sincerely appreciated.

LET’S GO BRANDON!!!
