I never have understood this, today we were driving through the hill county ( Kerrville - Llanno) then back. I saw diesel prices as low as $2.04 a gallon and as high as $2.67 a gallon. Is that considered price gauging? If not do stores have any kinda of mandate or law on the amount they can raise prices over cost?
Just curious

That makes sense, but they are about 20 miles apart, all off the same hwy 16.

Oh it definitely varies out here. When I need fuel I’ll get it from Fredericksburg or Marble Falls because it’s cheaper.

We have a small gas station in my hometown. The way it works at this one (this what they claim), they don’t change the price till the next delivery of gas they get. So the prices can seem high or low till the next delivery for them. When they deliver it they set a price then.

I pay $1.22 here on the west side. By the time you get to the other side of town its $1.49.

The price doesn't fall as fast in small towns because the lower sale volume, it takes them longer to sell out of gas. If their last fuel shipment was 3 weeks ago, then their pump price is based on what the wholesale price was at that time.

About a week ago, I found diesel for $1.59/gal. Maybe a mile away, it was $2.59. That was the greatest stretch between prices I've seen. This was in S. Arlington.

Not just small towns. When there is a spike in oil prices they have no problem raising the gas price. Even though the gas they have was bought at a lower price.

Bingo. The more they sell the price of the gas will go down. The more deliveries they get the price of the deliveries go down and that's how they base their price per gallon.
