You guys tell me what you truly think about LinkedIn. I've had an account for several years, but actually just started checking it since the downturn in oil. I have an opinion, but I'd like to know yalls first. popcorn

I have a job and don't really need to network or any of that stuff. Anyone I really want to hear from now and then already has my email address and/or phone number. Many of their notifications go straight to the trash folder.

I check it about 2-3 times a year. There 2 types of people that love it- sales people and people looking for a job. I am neither.

Unfortunately it's the only job search / networking site a lot of college kids know about. I've had to help most of our student employees find a job after graduation. They have better luck on Ziprecruiter.com and Indeed.

From a Sales perspective it’s a great way to validate a person’s current position before reaching out.

I've been on it for 10 years with my company and been great. But I'm a cowboy church member. So.

It's ok if you are interested in networking. It has a hard time keeping up with things however. I listed myself as Retired over a year ago and yesterday I got 3 "Congrats On Your 20 Year Anniversary" from a few connections. I've gotten 7 job offers as well. Maybe they think I was just kidding about the retirement thing. roflmao

I think LinkedIn is great. Some people's posts definitely have a weird feel of a twitter/facebook mixture. I have made some great connections on LinkedIn, one connection saved me about $12,000/year in insurance costs from the previous year and about $16,000 over two years before that. Other connections include industry-related people to bounce ideas off of, I have hired two great people from LinkedIn, have made some successful investments through a connection on LinkedIn. I think it's all about how you use it, much like Facebook and other social media platforms.

LinkedIn has it's benefits. I can tell you whenever I need to fill a position in my organization, I typically start by going to linked in and scrolling through my connections. I'll typically find some old colleague who had fallen from memory that might be a good fit. I've hired several people this way.

During good times I'd also say I get a 1-3 recruiters or HR heads reaching out to me per week with potential job offers.

That's all I use it for though. I don't post on there, nor do I read posts on there.
