Hello all, I wanted to ask about some pointers on dock shooting. I have never done it and want to give it a go. I am particularly wondering three things:
(1) if it is a good technique in the springtime?
(2) are there any particularly good lakes to try shooting around the north Texas area?
(3) what size rod do yall use?

1. As for springtime dock shooting...the post spawners will be moving to the docks and brush piles
2. The best two lakes that I have shot docks is Cedar Creek and Palastein
3. I have a 5.6 and a 6.6 Pro Anglers rods. Both are excellent shooters
4. And you didn't ask about line and jig size but here it is anyway. 6# test Hi Vis line is best for shooting (watch your line on the sink). NEVER use larger than a 1/16 oz jig head, and if you can shoot it good enough, use a 1/32 oz. A 1 - 1 1/2" bait is best for shooting (straight tail style, not a creature style bait, as straight tail style skip better).

Docks are hot right now. As for rods, just whatever you're comfortable with. I like a light rod with a fast tip. I shy away from ultra lights as they are just too limber for me. If you're just starting and don't want to shell out a lot of money on a rod, I suggest the 5'6" ugly stick (light with fast tip). It's easy to use and just about bomb proof. As mentioned above the 1/16 jig is probably the most widely used but if you'll drop down to 4 lb. test you can shoot a 1/32 just as far and sometimes it takes a 1/32 to trigger a bite. I keep a rod rigged just for 1/32 jigs. If you just have the one rod then I'd stick with the 6 or 8 lb. test. Look for docks that offer a lot of shade and right now they don't have to be deep docks. I'm catching under docks in 4 ft. water right now. Shoot as far up into the shade as you can and WATCH THAT LINE! Good luck to you with your new habit...

it willl continue to get better. My rule of thumb time of year is april 15 start gets going good. Runs strong thru thanksgiving then slows numbers wise but gets better quality wise. More shade the better. Depth change a plus but not as important. Brush is more hinderance than help when shooting

Docks are on fire 🔥!!! We are catching them on shallow Docks and new docks we found do to the lake being up more this time this year. As it heats up they will be on deeper docks but never give up on them shallows
Docks especially early morning late evening even as it heats up. I catch them on docks all the way to August then it seems to taper off a bit. I use a ACC crappie shooter 5.6 and it’s the best shooter yet as I’ve had lots of name brands.
Look for the shadiest area on the dock and shoot her in there and hang on because it’s addicting. I will say this don’t waste too much time on a dock just like a brush pile if you ain’t catching much move to your others and find the numbers. They can be on one of your favorite docks one day and gone the next but they are close by. You will learn what docks hold quality or even at all. Right now we are finding the quality on the north end of the lakes we fish.You have to put the time in. Good luck and happy fishing. Oh FYI those little condos work too under docks.
