During the early spring warm sunny days will bring fish to the top of the water column making them more susceptible to a topwater, during the spawn slow down and fish a frog or a popper right on top of their head. If you can see them great if not just throw next to cover and go slow as you can stand them wait another second. After the spawn it heats up with fry guarders and hungry females feeding back up. The other day I was catching fish in 54 degree water on a frog walking it as fast as possible in open water. I believe the key was the warming trend and it was a blue bird sky.
