But back to your question...... the ones on main lake points are usually best. Look for the deepest water possible and docks with the biggest decks you can find..... if you can find all of the above on one dock then it’s usually a good one. The fish are there for the shade and the correct water temps so the more shade and available water depth range the better.

Typically, the bigger the dock the better when you don't have sidescan. You can't always see them with it anyways. Shoot for the darkest corner or section underneath. Watching your line is a must. There's plenty of times you don't get a hit on the initial fall and you can lift it like Fishaholic says, or you can start reeling slow. If they are there, you will get bit on one of the three.

Thanks y’all, the one dock I did find fish on dropped from 8 to 40 ft in a casts distance pretty much and it was pretty big so it just made sense to catch some off of it. I’m looking forward to getting out there again and learning some more.

I have only been dock shooting a handful of times but something I have been curious about is if it’s actually acceptable or not to the person who owns the dock?
I have not had anyone say anything to me before but I did have someone come out, walk to the dock, and just watch me without saying a word. I was fishing from a float tube, not tied to their dock, and not shooting my jig near their boat. I could tell the person may have been uncomfortable with me there, so I left.
Now I totally understand, if I was the owner, that I don’t people out there snagging hooks in my patio furniture or boat, but it seems that most fisherman practice proper etiquette and are respectful of the dock owners property.
So I guess my question is. Is dock shooting something that is typical welcomed or frowned upon by those who have private docks?

What I’ve been told by a couple people a while back is that technically they don’t own the water so as long as you’re not touching their, they can’t really say anything. Although I try to be a little more respectful and if someone doesn’t want me there I’ll leave. I guess it would be a case by case basis for whether or not the owner is ok with it or not. I’ve had people come out and just have a conversation and ask me how the fishing was but other than that no one has seemed to care much.
