I never done it before. What time of the year do you start it. I fish Roberts so goin up in the timber off the main channel what are the best depths to start out with I would think water tempt would have something to do with it also. I have several old toe sacks to use was hoping to try and go every other day to fish and make sure it has feed. Going to get some stubby bait. Thanks for your help

Works for smaller fish if that's what your after.
PB flathead 34.5 lbs - I know it's small but it was still the record for Lake Travis when I caught it! PB Blue 58.5 lbs jugline 43.5 lbs on R&R which was the other Lake Travis record when caught.

I've been chumming spots before I fish and all the catch shows signs of feeding when I clean them.

Use that phone number that little wheel posted. Stubby and littlewheel guide for catfish every week and they are good. I have to say they are great for giving out details of how they do things. I still need to hook up with litylewheel myself.

From now till June you can catch them shallow on windy rocky banks. I take a 5 gallon bucket of wheat that has soured, go to the first spot and throw out chum, then to the second spot, then to the third, then I go back to the 1st spot and start fishing - drop some Mr Whiskers cheese bait on a small #8 trebble hook. If its shallow I'll throw it on a bobber and let it drift across the chumed area, this can be so fun to cast out and watch it drift along and then just disappear and wham, if it's deeper than 10' i'll just drop it straight down. Fish the first spot till it slows down, chum, then go to the second spot and fish it till it slows, chum then go to the 3rd spot. Then repeat this in the same pattern going from spot 1,2 and 3. After about 2 or 3 hours you will have either a mess of fish, or you will have figured out the best spot to catch you a limit. You really don't have to go pre-chumming a day or two in advance, it only takes 30 minutes for them to show up. The windier it is the better the fishing is as it draws them in for miles. Calm days it can be real slow.

I always used milo and crushed corn that i would soak for about a week. Sometimes put range cubes or beer in with it. But never actually baited a spot ahead of time. Always foshed a spot and if it looked good, I would sling some of the chum out with a scoop.

When Fort Worth Grain Exchange was down off of 28th by the old railroad you could buy a 50# wheat sack for $6. Now it's $10 for about a 25# sack.

I have found that too that baiting before hand isn't necessary for the average joe and a waste of time and money and doesnt result in more fish being caught if you have a decent lake. I throw semi soured milo out and range cubes in usually three spots and by the time you are done baiting your first spot will have most likely all the fish you care to catch. I like to do this in June-August but I'm sure you start right now as fish are pushing up shallow.

The late Bob Fincher made super punch bait and guided for cats. His words “You aren’t trying to feed the fish- you are trying to attract them to the area you are fishing” ! Not verbatim but best I recall. But everybody has different opinions on how to do it. It lets you know they found the chum when you see some on the cleaning table.

So, what's the difference between baiting a hole and chumming a spot?
