What time of year do the crappie really stack up under docks? And what methods do you use when dock shooting?

They are there now. Shoot a jig under there and watch that line jump.

That is definitely my favorite way to catch crappie. You can find them under docks really all year but now through the summer they will be under there. I use a 1/32 oz lead head with shad pattern jigs and let them fall all the way to the bottom and watch that line. Find the right depth and wear them out all day.

They are there now , look for the shady spots on the docks. I caught several a few weeks ago when we had some sun light on one of my favorite docks at RC. I shoot that sucker under there and let her fall all the way to the bottom and reel her in slow and bam !! It’s fishing though some days they are chomping at the bits and slam it and other times you have to Entice them with a slow steady reel in changing baits etc. That ole slab slobber works too. What is the ideal rod length for a first time user and do you change rod length when you get better at shooting?

Well it does require water under the docks...

A 5 1/2 or 6 foot rod is probably the best all around but I also use my 7 footers without any problem if I have plenty of room. Main thing is to make sure your rod has a fast tip.

I just recently bought the Wally Marshall speed shooter made for dock shooting. I believe it's 6 ft. It has worked well for me. You just have to practice and get the technique down. I bought it at Academy.

I went out to Cedar Creek yesterday in my kayak. This was my first time to try dock shooting. The water was REAL muddy, and it was pretty cloudy, very little sun. I just received my 6' dock shooter from ACC Crappie Stix, and had to get out.

I didn't get a bite. I blamed it on the cloudy weather and muddy water, but after reading this thread, I think my technique was wrong. I was using a 1/16oz jig head and a Slab Bandit. I also tried a small lure with a blade. I was not not allowing the jig to sink. I would shoot the jig under the dock and immediately start reeling.

So, do I let the jig sink to the bottom, and then begin to reel? I assume I don't want to drag the jig along the bottom. Anyway. . . Any further technique advice would be appreciated.
