Legally speaking, if you had an agreement with the guy to sell your camper and you took his money, that camper no longer belongs to you. The title makes no difference. notify the impound that you no longer are the owner and take any proof to them so they quit sending you stuff, it is not your van any more. Did you get the agreed purchase price? If so, I'd let the impound yard know that you sold it and are not the owner.
They have their own legal tools to resell it later & get some money out of it. Then the buyer can threaten to murder their families and leave you out of it. Whatever you gain from getting this property back would not be worth looking over your shoulder for many years to come- Don’t set yourself up to be a future “based on a true story” movie-
What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I knew a dude who sold two nice trucks to a couple of dudes, They both got arrested later in a drug sting. They had never registered the trucks and of course they put all kinds of electronics and upgrades in them.
He went and got them and resold them again, at a much lower price to turn a profit. That was your friend? Tell him I want my dang truck back. I'm out of jail now. Don't make me go looking for him.

There might have . Toll tag fees and parking tickets too ,link toward your plate. Do you have a dated bill of sale still. Thankfully there were no tolls or parking tickets up to the date of impound. When I got back in town I found the bill of sale and offered it to the Sheriff's department and they said fugghedabowtit the truck was sold as scrap. The VIN ceased to exist is what they told me.

Thanks for some thoughts guys. The murder my family bit was mainly stated to show the guy was insane. I don’t even remember his name but I do remember him coming to get it and he was intensely odd. He proceeded to live in the thing throughout McKinney and Melissa for the next year or more before I moved. He was living in the Academy parking lot for 6 months, then an old gas station parking lot, etc. Not that I know anything now, but even just that short time ago I was a naive college kid that knew nothing about anything really. I didn’t keep any paperwork. Don’t even know that we filled any out. I lived with my parents during that summer. I now live 4 hours away. The thought of stealing something from someone is certainly not me, BUT, the impound guy told me it’ll likely go to auction and then nobody will get it. If it’s between sending it to auction or me getting it back. I would rather take it. If this unknown man wants his camper back, he can have it. I think the point here is I’m 95% sure he’s not coming back for it. The other 5%? Well.. I’m still thinking I guess. I have a call in with my lawyer this morning to see what he thinks. Also gonna call the powersports place on 121 that authorized the tow. See what they say about how long it was dumped there.

As some have stated, $700 may be paid for a dump. I sold it for $3500 back then. And that’s the max it’s worth. I would want it back cause it’s cool and I’m in more of a position to actually work on it or use it these days. Would not be a money making endeavor. At least that’s not the plan.

He lived next to a relative. He was a drug cook/dealer. He sold two newish trucks to other drug dealers and they got arrested before title transfer, and he got alerted and went to impound and picked them up.

You got your $700. Don't let his problems become your problems. Let it go to auction. It is no longer your concern on what happens to the van.
He is truly a sick individual.

If you really think you want it wait for it to go to auction. But factor in the four hour drive, cost of getting it back to where you live and whatever repairs it will probably need.
What are the odds it has been used in the manufacture and/or transportation of meth? I think, and I think you do too, you are better off just letting it go.

I had to do a lot of digging through my multi volume set of books called "Things to Never Do Again" but I did find it:
Entry # 4,378 : Never ever sell a vehicle to anyone without a signed bill of sale and insuring that the DMV records are updated with the change of ownership of said vehicle.
I had to learn this lesson twice. 1976, I sold my 72 Camaro with a blown motor to a friend of mine in the Jet Engine shop at Langley AFB. I signed and gave him the title and made a makeshift bill of sale. He said he was just going to put another motor in it for the 1/4 mile dragstrip. 2 years later, I am stationed in Florida and I get a letter from the City of Philadelphia saying I owed them $280 for a traffic fine where the Camaro ran over a fire hose one day. It took numerous letters and affidavits to get that resolved. 1987, we sell my wifes 83 Buick skylark to a nice man and his teenage daughter. They were real nice. He was buying it for the daughter for school. Paid cash and we signed the title at the kitchen table and he promised he would register the car in his name. Wrong. For a year, we got parking tickets from Pleasant Grove showing parking violations near some high school. Threatening letters. More letters and calls and affidavits. So you see, I was TWICE stupid.

Bob, don’t feel bad. It took me 2 times to learn my lesson. The last one i just went ahead and paid the toll charges because i wasnt going to win that one. Now I pull off the plates, fill out the online form, sign the title, fill out the odometer reading, make a bill of sale, and get ID from the buyer.
Hope i never get pulled over and my drivers license run in Houston or New Orleans or i might go to jail for all those unpaid traffic tickets.
