What do you guys think about what's fair when fishing a team tournament, and the boat owner gets a bonus check for being in a qualifying boat , should it be split or does the boat owner deserve it all?

It should be split if you each get new boats from time to time and could be eligible from either of your boats. If you stagger this correctly and each get a boat every 6 to 8 years you can stay in bonus money on many trails. If you have a new boat but he always has an old one or buys used then you should keep the money or at least a larger captains share.

Sometimes it's best to discuss things like this with your partner before entering

If the teammate split the contingency fee's then sure, give him half. That being said, he still did his part in the tournament to get you that win that got you the check, so yea, give him half. A good partner may try to give it back to you. in that case, that's a stand up guy, and let him have it.

However, if it is expected of the partner to give you half, then find a new partner.

Ok next question, the boat owner will receive a 1099 and pay taxes, and the co angler won't, should that be factored in?

Yes, of course. Whoever is paying the taxes should withhold that extra, or you can 1099 your partner.

It really needs to be talked about before you enter the tournament. I personally think the boat owner should get to keep the money because the tournament is putting wear and tear on his boat. Unless you are fishing and winning a lot of tournaments together the boat owner is going to be loosing money in his boat expenses. The none boat owner gets to save on a major expense of fishing tournaments if he isn't helping with the cost of the boat. Outside the professionals, there are very few tournament fisherman that are making enough in checks from boat manufactures to cover the cost of their boat each year.
Unless the non boat owner is paying for 100% of some of the other expenses such as gas, boat maintenance, entry fees, food, or hotels, I would look for a different partner if he was expecting me to split the money from the boat manufacturer.

I have a couple of simple things I follow.
If I invite you to fish, you don't owe me anything. If you offer, it is appreciated and refused. I was going fishing anyway, your just a tag along.
If I fish a team tourney with you, we split winnings. Helping with gas it a plus.
If we fish a team circuit, we have already talked about how to split stuff. Again, winnings split and gas split for a circuit. Doesn't matter whose boat we take.

Does the passenger wish to split the boat payments 50/50? If not then I'd say the boat owner gets it to help maintain the boat. The only reason it is three is because he bought that brand.
