I’m relatively new to fishing with Dobyns rods and I have several and working on getting my hands on more. I’m wanting to get a rod for flipping and pitching. I’ve seen several of the rods but curious how some fish specifically with braid. I typically will have a flouro leader. Since braid does not stretch, which of the Dobyns rods for flipping and pitching would be best for braid that will have some flex to give a little for that braid?

I have a champion 765 flip which is probably way too stiff for braid, I use straight 25 Fluoro on it. I flip really heavy cover with braid on a 735, and with 65 it works, it could still be overkill if you really hammer the hook set. If you are going with braid to fluoro I would try a 4 power rod, like a 734 maybe, 735 could still work. Hope that helps. Sometimes with braid on my 735, I drag the hook in their mouth leaving a gouge, not good for the fish or me if they shake the hook out.

I really like my two champion extreme hp medium-heavy 795 flip rods. Especially with braid. The longer rod let me have a leader with a little more room so the connecting knot doesn’t have to go through the eyelets. The medium heavy action has plenty of backbone, but is soft enough to not create too much shock and snap your line.

Champion 765 Flip will work well with braid. From my experience, the rod doesn't handle lure weight that it's marked for though. It felt really overpowered when I used anything more than a 1oz. Also, Dobyns really doesn't have a rod that is a true parabolic flipping/braid rod. If you're set on Dobyns, then try the 765 or 805 punch rod. My recommendation of a rod would be the Kistler MAD(not sure if that model is still made) or ALX Powerbolt. Both are a mod/fast action, designed for loading on a hook set.

My favorite rod for pitching a Texas Rig or ½ oz. jig or lighter is the DX 744 full handle. In fact I have 2 of them. It’s perfect for skipping and pitching light pegged Texas rigs under cover and under docks. Paired with a Diawa Tatula SV it’s about a good as it gets. http://dobynsrods.com/rod/dx-744c-fh/ . I also have the DX 745 full handle too and love it as well, but I find myself using the 744 more often lately, fishing around bedding fish.

I use 734's and 735's with braid and leader for flippin and pitchin and 735's for frogs, heavy Carolina, big swimbaits, heavy jigs, bladed jigs in grass, etc.

The last digit on the Dobyns model # is their power rating. It has been experience that while Dobyns builds one of the finest rods available, their powers are a touch on the light side. If using braid to leader I would recommend a 4 power rod like the above mentioned 734 or 744. If flipping with flourocarbon, which is what I do 90% of the time, then I would go with the 5 power rod. If you are wanting a rod to double as a flipping/pitching rod and a frog rod it will be really hard to beat the 735. That is one of the most versatile rods they make, and probably my personal favorite.

I have several I use for flipping and pitching. I have an Extreme 805 Flip/Punch rod I use for really heavy grass and structure, an Extreme 795 flip I like to use for all around flipping, an Extreme 745 and my new favorite I started using last year was my Extreme 704. It is awesome around tight spots and getting baits deep under tight docks.
