My Dad and I were going to bass fish an east Texas lake, and thought it might be a good idea to find a guide to speed up the learning curve. Somebody on here recommended a couple of guides, and only one of them called us back so we went with him. He admitted that he guided on several area lakes, but had 25 years of experience fishing this one, so it sounded good to me. It was a pretty tough day with very few bites for us. He insisted fishing shallow in the backs of coves and creeks even though the water temps were 55-59 degrees and we were obviously pre-spawn. Long day and story short my Dad and I got skunked, and the guide caught 2. The guide still expected to be paid the full price. I don't understand that. I own a service company and if we can't fulfill our terms we don't charge our customers. I think a discount would at least be in order. I've heard of guides offering a second trip for free or at a greatly reduced rate. This guy wouldn't hear it. If a person is going to guide people to catch fish on a lake he should be able to catch fish on that lake, or it should hit him in the wallet not me. The same thing happened to us last year on Ray Bob with a different guide. Just wondering what you guy's thoughts are on the situation.
P.S. My cousin was also fishing the same lake that day. He put 9 in the boat fishing a little deeper water and a little farther out in the coves and creeks....

Perhaps those terms should be discussed with said guide beforehand. Lesson learned, I'm sure you will not use him again and probably won't recommend him to anyone. That's his loss and that alone will hit the wallet. I have been with guides that on a day like that have either offered a discounted future fish trip or knock some money off the day.

what's the deal with guides, or one guide in particular? sounds like you are throwing all the guides under the bus...

Don’t think guide service and a typical service business are quite the same. First thing fishing is fishing guide or not. Some days they don’t cooperate . If he didn’t perform as expected don’t use him again. J D

Are all guides that way? Probably not. That has been my experience with the only two I hired. I hear there’s some great ones out there. Danny Golden comes to mind. I’m just frustrated. You expect that when you hire a guide you’re going to catch fish.

Just like any other business, some workers are better than others. Some people do all they can do, others will only do what they have to do. Sorry that you got a bad one.

Almost sounds like Will Kirkpatrick to me as well. Got burned by him a couple of years ago... He’s FAR from being a guide, but can talk a good game. They even had him speak at the show in Houston a week or 2 ago... He can talk the talk, but that’s it!

There are some great guides out there. Many on Lake Fork, Rayburn, Falcon and TB. If you go into it without speaking beforehand on the details of the trip, how you will fish and you express your expectations then its kinda on you just a bit as well. You gotta communicate prior. Reality is the fish do not always bite and as long as the guide works hard to put me on fish and teaches me a few things I am happy. I had a guide last year out of state on a popular big fish water that I hired last minute. He was excellent. He worked hos tail off, knew that water well and put us in areas loaded with big fish. They were postspawn and finicky but we could still see them. We caught some. He easily burned a whole tank of fuel and we stayed out 2-3 hours longer that the trip was scheduled for. He absolutely refused a tip back at the ramp. He would not hear of it since we had a slow day. That guy would make a killing on some of our lakes. One of the best days on the water I have had with a guide.

Too bad I am not guiding any more If no one caught fish, I gave your $250 back, $250 out of my pocket and gave you another free trip. BUT, I have been on that lake over 500 times. Only twice was 1 fish caught, once by me and once by my client. FISHIING is NOT like other service agendas. YOu are currently at the full control of mother nature and NO ONE likes it when things go sideways. Since you have been twice with the same situation, I would as a TON of questions about what was expected from you to the guided. He could then adjust his thoughts, if needed. GUIDING prespring is a TUFF situation to begin with, not a lot of fish, but if you catch one, it could be bigger, but not always. OH, I had 106 guide trips over 3 years and NEVER had to make good on it. The guy that did not catch a fish, I offered a free guide trip too, but he didn't take it, because his main idea was to learn the lake and where to drive his boat. NO ONE has made that same guarantee that I am aware of, but someone might have. So you want to pay him little or nothing for doing his job to the best of his abilities? I do not understand that, but what do I know. Best tip I had was when I took a doctor and his son fishing. They both caught personal best and he insisted on giving me a $500 bonus, I kept trying to decline it, but he insisted.
Before you go again, have an EXTENDED conversation with the guide, telling him EXACTLY what you expect, so he can change his ways f guiding if need be. That is mt final thought on the matter. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I know for a fact, "guides" come out of the wood work this time of year. Anybody can get a guide license. With that being said, fish don't always cooperate, even with the best of guieds. Like the above stated, do your research, you do the talking on what to expect before hand. I never meet or talked to a bass guide that will guarantee you will catch 'em or your money back. They have a huge expense and how they make a living.

Its fairly hit and miss. Probably 10 or 12 bass guides in the whole state worth messing with. Alot of weekend warriors looking to make a boat payment.

Should have hired your cousin to take you out. Pre spawn fishing is generally very low numbers and possible giant. If you expect different, fish in June when dink fest starts. Not all guides are the same, so the thread title seems to be an unnecessary shot at the profession and area.
Woke up this morning Got yourself a gun....

Sounds like poor communication. If you expected a free trip if you zero’d, you should have asked him ahead of time if he would refund your money if nothing was caught. At the end of the day it’s fishing, not catching that you are usually paying for. I’ve hired guides in the past, but for learning, not necessarily catching.
