I hooked a fish on my fly rod and while I was pulling it in something bigger decided to eat it. After nearly an hour fighting the fish, it turned out to be a large protected sandbar shark, so we release it. The sandbar was one of the biggest I have seen and would easily go over 100 pounds.

Well done. What weight rod? I do mainly bay fishing when I go and use an 8 weight.

Well done. What weight rod? I do mainly bay fishing when I go and use an 8 weight. The reel is an Okuma SLV 10/11 and the rod is an Ugly Stik 11/12 Wt. I fish a great deal offshore with this set-up and it is very effective. I also use an 8 wt In the bay. I was trying to get a mako

Curious what fly line you use that can take that abuse? Also, what kind and size fly do you use to try to catch Mako's? Great report and thanks. Don't worry about me trying to compete with you! IslandJim

I use several different types of line both floating and sinking. This was Cortland 444 sinking. For Mako I normally use floating line. The important thing is the leader. I use 6 feet of Cortland 120 pound toothy critter tie-able steel leader. It is great for all the toothy fish like kingfish, wahoo, and sharks. If I am after IGFA world records I can only use 12” of the steel leader. The fly is an Osborn Vermilion Snapper Fly. It is a 10 inch, 2 hook fly that resembles a dying snapper. It is good for kingfish, red snapper, jacks, sharks, wahoo... I will see if I have a picture.

Oh and the other important part of the set-up is the backing. I use 500 yards of 100 pound Power Pro and I have been close to being spooled several times lol.

Congrats. You seem to be having a heck of a 2020 so far Thanks sdavis24. I am working on a crazy Texas state record goal. The goal has already resulted in catching some great fish and fishing in some exciting places this year.
