Couldn’t think of a better title but here is my question. When is the advantage we get as anglers by our electronics no longer fair chase?

I’ve heard some countries in Europe have banned some of the features of the new technologies. (Unverified but from a usually reliable source)

I feel we are rapidly approaching that conversation as well. Interested to hear others opinions.

Never in my opinion. Someone will always have a faster boat, better tackle, etc. Still gotta be able to catch fish. Plenty of guys with 85k setups and they can't catch a limit.

Do you catch every fish you see with your current electronics? I don’t.

I do not think it will stop. Now will they ever be able to tell you a specie ? No, but even now you can kind of get an idea. But it is like technology for everything. Look at golf, bigger heads , better balls, better alloys, many historic courses are no longer long enough. But at the end of the day you still need to catch them. And as we saw this week with the MLF, Mother Nature showed that even the best can zero.

I think they do have restrictions on golf.. im not an expert but i think both the clubs and balls have limits ..

I asked this same question on BASSLIVE twitter and the responses were very interesting.. Davy and Ronnie do not think we will get there .. but they also have electronic sponsors, so it is what it is..

In my opinion we are not there yet.. but look at where technology was 10 years ago... where will it be in 10 more years as the live keeps getting better and better??? I do think you can compete (locally at least) without 10-15k in electronics... but will you in 10 years?? I do think it is a fair question...

Look how far ultrasounds have come in the last few years and compare that to how far fishing electronics have come in the last few years. popcorn2

At some point someone will make one that will make Live Scope look like 8 Bit. rock

Heck ive seen enough giants cruising around at Alan Henry and havent caught the first fish Ive seen.

The image i got with my naked eye is dar better than my electronics, yet i still didnt catch them.

So until your electronics hook the fish for you, reel them to the boat, and nets them, i dont think its too much.

Still have to make them bite.

Exactly, you still have to make them bite no matter how good your equipment is. Just look at the evolution fishing rods from bamboo, to fiberglass, to graphite and getting more and more sensitive all the time but you still have to get the fish to bite.

Bet Jason Christy has the best electronics available. Might have wrote a hot check to buy them, but look what they are doing for him.

Are bass tournaments big in Europe?...besides Spain does anyone bass fish in Europe?

I'm not a fan of this "banning" stuff like this...that is a can of worms that I hope stays closed. It starts on one thing and spreads to others. I work hard for my money and i want to freely choose what to buy and use. I don't need someone telling me I can't run a certain depthfinder. Thats ridiculous to me. I"ll spend my money the way I want and others do the same.

That being said I am fine with basic units and do not get caught up in getting crazy with electronics. I see zero need for myseld=f to have 4 big screen units but more power to those that do. cheers

I’ve always felt that there is a point of diminishing return for each and every angler regarding their investment in electronics, rods, reels, etc. It differs for everyone across the spectrum from occasional angler to competitive professionals which explains the ebb and flow of positive/negative opinions - it’s all a matter of perspective. For one, it’s a hinderance while for another, a necessity...

I know a guy that borrowed against his 401k to buy $5,000 worth of electronics and he cant get away from fishing docks. Not using sidescan to locate docks with brush either.

I don't see them making laws against it, they were talking about the Pros using drones to find beds on MLF today. They have passed laws preventing using drone to aid in hunting deer where over harvest of the resource is a concern but I don't see them doing it for fishing at least in the short term.

Seems simple enough to me, don’t use it if you think it’s unsporting, unethical, or canned fishing.
