I was thinking of joining a friend on a catfishing trip to Lake Tawakoni this coming weekend - noticed on the weather forecast that the Sabine River is at flood stage as is the lake.

How has this affected the catfishing? I was thinking that if they keep gates open and have a running current, that may actually help the fishing. At the same time, I've usually had terrible luck fishing for catfish immediately after heavy rains.

We're most interested in targeting large blue cats - when lake levels are high this time of year, would we have better luck in shallower coves or in the main channel/deep end of the lake near the dam?

Big tournaments the next two weekends. Eaters in running water

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Had no idea about the tournaments. I may want to postpone the trip for a week or two. I found info on the Cabela's Cat Classic for 3/7, who's doing the other tournament?

After those 2 tournaments there will be a lot of catfish with sore mouths. If I were you I would put it off for a week or so, but you have to fish when you have time to fish.
