I forgot my paddle one day and ended up using my stake out pole as a paddle. Paddled a couple of miles with it. It starts really slow but was surprise at how well it worked once speed picked up.

gander: As a rank amateur kayaker that basically taught himself to paddle, let me tell you a story. I was paddling back to my launch after about 5 miles, and was tired and just flailing the water with my paddle. Fil Spencer, an experienced kayak fishing guide, paddled by me and said, "Take long, slow strokes". I started doing that, using my body, twisting it, and soon, I caught up to Fil! His passing-by instruction taught me more than five years of paddling had. Stick your paddle forward into the water, use your body to power your kayak forward, not just your arms! It'll make your kayaking much more enjoyable. My $.02. IslandJim

He was part of the group of 8 or 10 kayak anglers that made the drive from the Houston/Galveston/Rockport area to take part in the first national saltwater kayak tournament trail (humminbird extreme edge series). What a great group of Texans to make it over. There were five tournaments, three in Florida, two in Texas. I was brand new at kayaking and rented a kayak to compete on the tour.
