The James river near Mason Texas has a large population of sucker in the clear waters of the river. Tried catching some to add to my impromptu species list. Had no luck. They spooked easily in the clear shallow water.

Good to know! Do you happen to know what species of sucker they are? Might need to make a trip down there one day to try and catch a few

They were small. Biggest may have been 1/2 to 3/4 pound at most. Never caught one to get a good enough look to ID which ones they were. They were steadily grazing along the bottom. I was heading to see the Eckert (sp) bat cave. It is nearly worth the trip itself. You have to drive across and through the river at a low water crossing. Very scenic drive in thru the hill country. Need to go during the summer to see the bats. 4 to 6 million bats hang out there. Impressive when they head out in the evening. Google map is included below. https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-in...ct/eckert-james-river-bat-cave-preserve/

Fishing in Colorado last year we encountered several small schools of White Suckers in a shallow area near a stream discharge. Out of accident while fishing for trout there we found out a San Juan Worm fly suspended just off the bottom with a strike indicator was irresistible to them and caught several. With the fly rod we could remain low and make a long soft presentation without spooking them out of the area. It was a lot of fun as the Suckers when hooked fought much harder than Trout of the same size. I have tried other real and artificial baits in past years for sight fishing suckers in Colorado and Texas before with poor success. A Fly Fishing/San Juan Worm presentation might be worth a serious try for those Texas Suckers next time.
