I just got my renewal notice from 1st Choice Power. The rate they offered is 15% above market and 30% above what I was paying on a 2 year contract. Do they really expect me to just blindly sign up for this offer? This same carp happens every time I have to renew. I have probably been with 5+ companies since deregulation. The REPs are just like the cable and phone companies. They go after new customers with good deals and then when the contract renews they offer a non-competitive rate. It is a little tougher to switch cable or phone companies but as easy as it is to change REPs I don't really understand it. I told them to take their offer and put it where the sun does not shine.

I am surprised at the number of my neighbors who don't shop their electricity rate for each contract. Some have never changed since they moved into their house.

The worst is TXU, their rates are outrageous. They prey on the elderly and others who don't understand deregulation and who still believe TXU is the "electric company".
I have to go through this every year with my mom - I just did it a couple of weeks ago. Every time she thinks she has to be home because someone has to come out to do something to the meter, or that her electricity is going to be shut off, or that she's going to be billed double by two different companies, or some other similar imagined complication. That's why the companies do this - because too many people don't understand it so they just stay with whoever they're with.

I don’t see the problem, just change companies. The end date is clearly on the original contract.

Two words - Energy Ogre. Stop playing stupid contract games and getting ripped off. It's worth the $10 a month to me to never have to think about this BS.
You are not a good or nice person.

I play the game and change but a lot of people get taken advantage of. I have a spreadsheet with rates and can easily compare plans so I don't need a service to do it for me. I know exactly when my contract ends. Just like Canino's mom I never could convince my dad to switch from TXU.

Fate has pooled residents and submitted to various REPs to get a group discount. I will receive quotes tomorrow. In the past it was either the timing was off or I could do better on my own. We will see how it works out this time.

At least ya'll have a choice. The part of East Texas I live in had not deregulated yet so we can NOT shop around. Look at Lubbock, where I live. The only utility company that services inside the city limits is owned by the city. Talk about a monopoly.
