Grass fire started by helicopter landing lights. How hot are these lights? Why not have LED lights? Just curious. Fox News

I was looking at the landing light on a B-52 when the crew chief flashed them (they did this to flag down their expediter). It was like the sun. took me a good 15 minutes to see again.

It's not the first time helicopter landing lights have started grass fires after landing in dry, tall grass and/or weeds. They fly with their landing lights on 24/7 in support of operations such as those being conducted in Australia right now. I'm not sure how hot those lights can get, but plenty hot enough to ignite dry tinder.

Their spotlights are pretty hot. Our fixed landing/runway turnoff lights have a 5 minute operating limit if the aircraft is not moving...they burn the lenses without the cooling airflow
