Agree....who lives on Fork and wants a clean bank?? Seriously. We don't even mow our waterfront on Fork, just let it grow wild. Would do anything (have tried moving it) to have some good grass growing in my area.

I log each day pretty much since 1983 and I see things on paper I don't like.

Our fish at Fork have more predator threat today than ever before. The lake now has Hybrids , yes I caught 5 last year up to 6 lbs. White bass, water turkeys, tournaments and OH TURTLES. Lack of cover to hide the baby bass.

The small bass don't have much of a chance to make it to 3 lbs because no where to hide and every predator is after them from day one. So most never make it to the slot. We have a gap in the 3-6 lb range.

Still have some big ones out there which most people come here for but, from a customers point they want to catch fish while targeting a big ones and they don't want to catch 12-16 inch ones. I totally understand this.

TPW had some areas they cages around grass this year but it seems the turtles and the coots are eating it before it reaches it full bloom.

Grass is probably the biggest thing we need and more stockings.

Until this year the last 4-5 years I think we only received 325,000. This year was 552,000 I think and that is at a 1 % survival rate. Do the math 5,520 fish for 27,000 acres. That is a number for a 35 acre lake.IMO

We have a new fisheries guy now that is going to do us right cause he fishes and understands fish. The last guy we had did not fish or know fish.IMO

I am not here to bash Fork. I love this lake and care for it a lot. I just want my grandkids to get to fish it and enjoy it as I did and knowing they may catch a giant.

Thanks! I have found a bit of grass that didn’t get sprayed this year......yet. Funny thing is there is a bunch of it that is growing out of the top of the big stumps versus on the bottom. For the most part there is no grass and fear never will be again. Too many park home developments and everyone wants that clean bank in front of their spot....

We used to come up a couple of times a year and spend 2-3 nights at Rainswood, eating breakfast and lunch there. The owner was obnoxious pretty much all the time. One day one of my friends wanted to buy a few bags of worms on his credit card and the old grouch chewed him out over it and told him that was ridiculous, he should pay cash. We all sat there over our lunch and said to each other, "We're here paying to stay in his rooms, and eating 2-3 meals a day here, and buying stuff from his store...and he treats us like that?"

We never came back. We started staying at Val's Landing.

to add to what Marc said about the condition of the lake and stocking. Yes those fence circles are surrounding hydrilla. According to their scientists the soil contains hydrilla. The problem is that apparently turtles love to eat immature hydrilla. Looking at where the fences are you will see that it is eaten back where the turtles can get their head thru but doing well in the middle.
So how to get knock down the turtle population? I say more gators. We need to catch a bunch of baby gators and move them to other creeks will the adults can't eat them.

The stocking of the Florida strain bass has been successful since TPWD stopped dumping them off of bridges and at boat ramps. Now they are put into smaller boats and taken to the back of creeks. Our live release boat has also been a factor for the last 4 years. We have been able to put large numbers of the fry into Birch, Glade, Coffee, Lake Fork Creek, White Oak and smaller amounts into the back of perhaps 20 other coves and creeks.

The fry that we have stocked all have known DNA. So in 4 to 5 years when they are much larger TPWD will be able to identity where they were stocked. And in perhaps 6-8 years they will begin showing up in the DNA study of overs we are doing on the live release boat.

I am not sure which was best, the burgers, or the pancakes. I would almost guarantee you I ate there more than just about anyone from 85-88. I was on the lake almost daily back then. Great times.

Whether you believe the fishing is good or not, the issue with Fork is the location. It is difficult to have a tourism business in a location so far removed from other activities. Fork will always get the fisherman business, but it is not going to start getting the family vacation business. Fork really isnt even a recreation possible lake for the members of the family that dont care to fish exclusively, and that eliminates a large majority of the population. Just getting family business for extended weekends will always be tough for Fork. Throw in the undesirable tournament formats due to the slot (my opinion and I know others will disagree) and you eliminate a large amount of fisherman business that lakes like Rayburn are getting (though also a tough place to think about investing in Tourism).

These factors are also what make Fork a desirable fishery, but still tough to overcome the investment in real estate needed for tourism.

I thought about retiring to Lake Fork but as you've pointed out the lake is too remote for the type of "normal living" that my wife and I wanted. That is is is too far from a Lowe's or Home Depot and the best chance for a night out meal would be a buffet at an all you can eat catfish place.

30 minutes away from Sulphur Springs is too far away for you? Lowes, Walmart and quite a few eating places are there. The Gurb House is a fantastic place to eat at located in the town square.
Tyler is a nice city to retire to also, especially if you need a doctor or hospital close by.

I'm about 5 miles north of it, going to try to go see what has been done next week.

I have discussed the use of fertilizers with the TPW to help grow grass.

The problem is after spraying the grass and weeds the weeds decompose and as it lays on the soil on the bottom the soil absorbs it and from what I read it stays in the soil for life.

With that being said we may never ever grow grass again in those areas where they have sprayed.

Make sense and explains why some areas are now void of any vegetation and why grass is growing in the top/middle of big stumps in some areas but not growing in the bottom in 2-3 fow. Also explains why fish aren’t relating to the bottom and suspending so much. Time to draw the lake down 10-15 ft for a full season and restart. Worked after the drought with tons of grass in old areas like birch and glade and then the spraying started again. I heard there was tons of spraying this past summer and fall and areas that had tons of milfoil pond weed and pads in spring early summer were void in September.
