I feel the same way. If you make it to a certain age, eat, drink or smoke whatever you want. Eff it. Amen.

At Thanksgiving last year, I was seated next to my grandmother-in-law, who is 97 and has re-entered the toddler stage. She is also diabetic. She lives with my in-law and they watch her diet closely. Well, every time something was passed our way, she asked for some. And later kept reaching for stuff she shouldn’t eat. I got in trouble for letting her have whatever she asked for, because I feel like she should be able to eat whatever she wants.
My great aunt, who never drank, started drinking red wine when she was in her 90s because her doctor told her it was good for her heart. We all loved it. She had zero tolerance and it was hilarious after one small glass of wine.

Last time I shared a cold one with my great grandmother. She worked her butt off on her land and garden up until three months before she passed. She would have 1 Budweiser, with, straw a day or a nip of Crown Royal on special days. She was 95, and no way in hell I would tell her what to do. Nip on!

Best advice I ever got was from my grandmother. Best stories I ever heard were her stories of growing up during the depression on their farm near Josephine, TX. Even though cornbread and beans was all they had to eat some days, they had plenty of it and enough to share with hungry strangers. Amazingly enough, she loved cornbread and beans till the day she died. She was loving, but tough as hell if you pissed her off. Not a woman you could take advantage of, nor was it wise to jack with her.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

My aunts could put it away like it was water. The sanctimonious "holier than thou" nonsense is absurd and I had to deal with it from my cousins about my aunts when they got older. Health reasons and I might nag a little bit of "I want you around for a long time. Please go easy on it" but I'm not going to tell the person who was responsible for me, that they can't have a nip or two. Especially the people that had their own still back in the day.

The health concerns are a joke. It takes years of HEAVY drinking to do any type of permanent damage. By your mid -70's any health problem you are going to get due to bad choices has already happened.
I like the line in Little Miss Sunshine. Alan Arkin played a grandpa that was just a little off his rocker, and his son caught him shooting up heroine. "Of course I know its stupid; its stupid if you're young. I'm old. I'm going to die soon anyway. It would be stupid for me NOT to try heroine!"

The health concerns are a joke. Not for diabetics. Alcohol is converted to sugar and depending on how much you consume and how badly you respond to it, a beer or two can send you over 400 before you know it. Moderation is key.
